This is a lovely and a somewhat storied arm, masterfully stocked by LePage Freres, the arm was constructed using an antique barrel of exceptional quality, which still clearly had a lovely bore, warranting its use on this much later fowler. The barrel was made in 1707 by Mattias Baeza of Madrid. It shows a lovely bright blue, no doubt redone masterfully by the LePage brothers. There is a gold bead front sight mounted in the typical star or turtle base. There are three turned medials at the point of transition, one simple band, one lightly engraved medial and another more prominently engraved fleur-de-lis-like medial. The top three flats of the octagonal sections feature overall gold inlaid damascening showing geometric panels on the left and right diagonal flats with crosses, foliate and rough floral patterns, some accented by fleur-de-lis-like ornamentation at the end of each panel. The top flat shows Baeza's sunken initials beneath crown in squarish field ''MTS/BA/EZA, as well as his touchmark, also sunken in a gold rectangle. The top barrel flat reads ''Sanguinea Bellona Manu (geometric rectangular pattern) longaque fatigat: 1707'' (Likely some reference to Bellona, Roman goddess of war, roughly ''with her bloody hand, Bellona guides....''). The original flintlock vent area can actually be seen beneath the blue if one studies it closely, and there is nice color case-hardening at the new breech, installed with circular bolster and a large rear cap deflection flare, showing overall nice quality scroll and geometric engraving with gold wire inlaid rococo swirls. The lockplate and hammer show some nice color case-hardening as well and show the same overall gold inlaid rococo wire decoration and engraved scroll, with game birds at the front of the lock and the LePage brothers name and Paris address at the rear. There is an ornate blued steel tailpipe/nosecap which is nicely engraved with light gold inlay and the barrel is keyed with a single engraved wedge through ornate sideplates. The triggerplate shows some strong remnants of color case-hardening with identical gold inlay and engraving on its front extension. The fancy recurving triggerguard retains much original blue with nice gold wire inlays and a crowing pheasant on the bow, the decoration continues onto the long tang which has faded somewhat to a dull pewter gray in the grasping area. The buttplate as well is smooth steel with much original pale blue and nice tang engraving showing a standing heron near the heel, inlaid in gold. The French walnut buttstock rates excellent with a high-gloss piano finish and the expected very light dings and handling marks from the years. It features extensive excellent quality flowing rococo carved scroll in the grasping area of the grip, flowing along onto the toeline, with an identical panel in the grasping area of the forend, the left side flat identically carved. The arm is single trigger equipped and the lock is crisp and mechanically functional and what is likely the original ivory tipped bone ramrod is included, with threaded wad pull on the off end. An exceedingly lovely arm, it comes in a hinged French-fitted carry case with pale blue baize interior with carved ebony handled turn screw, Mahogany wiping rod, cleaning jag and wad pull and a space for a bullet mould which is no longer present; there is a nice turned muzzle plug included. The exterior of the case shows light pebbled paper covering with gold line and bead embossing. There is a gold plated and engraved carry handle and the initials ''JV de C'' embossed in gilt beneath. There is some scuffing on the sharp edges and some loss on the corners of the case but it still rates fine overall with the interior compartment lids still intact. A very lovely arm, clearly made for a person of import and of means, perhaps the original arm was a family heirloom hence the choice of that barrel for this shotgun. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm on day of sale providing the proper paperwork is filled out and the transfer has been approved either through the NH State Police or the FBI NICS System. While most NICS and State approvals are immediate, approvals could take up to 3 days. Most non-residents may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check; modern handguns will need to be shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale. Firearms are marked as follows: ANTIQUE - no paperwork required C&R - for firearms that fall under the ATF Curio & Relics licensing and if purchased by a person with a “C&R License” no paperwork is required. NOTE: Items that meet the age requirements but have been altered from their original configuration may NOT be delivered on a C&R License. Firearms that are not marked with one of these notations are considered to be “MODERN” and all proper paperwork is required unless you are an FFL Dealer. ABSENTEE/TELEPHONE/ON-LINE BIDDING • As a service to our buyers, Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will accept absentee bids from bidders who cannot attend the sale. Bidders without prior credit approval are required to submit a 20% deposit prior to bids being accepted (credit cards may be used for absentee deposits). Absentee bids will be bid in a competitive manner and an absentee bidder needs only to outbid another buyer i.e. bidding will not be opened at the maximum bid unless that is the next competitive bid.
