serial #1282, 16 ga. (2 9/16”), 27 1/2" plain barrel with a fine bore choked modified. The metal surfaces retain about 80% original blue finish toning to a brown patina with some faint scratches and spots of light oxidation. The checkered capped pistolgrip walnut stock with raised cheekpiece rates about very good with light handling marks and a thin 2 1/2" crack at the right of the upper tang, it is tight; the swivel stud hole has been filled. The forearm is a plain walnut gunsmith replacement still in a state of initial shaping with a thin crack at the front of forearm in the barrel channel, behind the magazine cap. A good overall condition Rheinmetall shotgun manufactured in the 1920's closely resembling the Auto-5. Rheinmetall Nr. 4 semi-automatic Shotgun serial #2152, 16 ga. (2 9/16”), 32" plain barrel with a fine bore choked a light full. The metal surfaces are primarily a plum brown overall, showing some light oxidation on the left receiver flats, the receiver with two added very tiny holes just above the breech area. The checkered round knob pistolgrip walnut buttstock rates very good with good original varnish and a few scattered light handling marks and 1 1/2” chip missing to the left of the upper tang, the grain is very straight and it should be a very easy repair. The checkered walnut forearm rates otherwise very good were it not for two lengthy 7” cracks along their bottom edges, as is typical with Auto 5 shotguns, these arms no exception; there is a 1” sliver missing from its left upper rear edge. One of the stop screws is missing from the receiver and there is a small spot of cold blue at its left rear, this example neatly marked with a “Made in Germany” at front of receiver. The guns seem to function OK when hand-cycled. While Amoskeag Auction Company does not usually lot firearms up, the consignor requested these to be sold as a pair in the hopes that some restorer or fledgling gunsmith will return them both to their original glory, each having a sample arm to work from, the two could be brought back to restored condition.
