Catalog Auction info Auction #132 - Two-Day Sale, November 20th & 21st (#132) 11/20/2021 9:00 AM EST Closed Starts Ending 11/20/2021 9:00 AM EST Auction Info Lot #558 Interesting Argentine Model 1927 Three-Caliber Set, Facsimile of U.S. Government Match Armorer Set Made for General George Simler Click image to enlarge PreviousNextSimilar Items Lot closed - Sold Price (Including Buyer`s Premium):$2,760 Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000 Description Description: serial #33041, 45 ACP, 38 Super, 22 LR. This is an interesting three slide, three caliber set, utilizing an Argentine Model 1927 frame, and is accompanied by a 1973 dated letter from a James Wolmers, Col. USAF, Chief Gunsmith Div/MMS. According to Department of Air Force records, on July 7, 1968 General George Simler authorized them to make the following modifications to his “Colt Pistol, M1911A1, Caliber 45, serial #33041”: “rebuild to match grade specifications, fit Colt 38 Super and Colt Ace 22 long rifle slide assemblies to component number 33041, with minimum tolerance to ensure proper functioning and accuracy”. These were then to be fitted to a special case provided by Gen. Simler. It is interesting that all three slides are 1959-1969-era Colt slides, whether or not the general somehow had an Argentine Model 1927 frame for his Colt slide may never be known, although that is the current configuration of the arm. The pistol and all three slides retain 98 to 99% plus original and professionally refinished polished and satin blue finishes (the frame being polished and refinished to match the slides, the Ace slide neatly professionally refinished as well). The smooth grips with gold Rampant Colt medallions appear to be mesquite however may well be rosewood, they are as-new and show some nice grain figure. The barrel is indeed a Colt National Match part number 779031, with National Match bushing number 7267718, the barrel with a bright excellent bore, the bushing numbered “6236” on its right side interior. The slide has a simple flat blade front sight, very neatly silver soldered in place and a tall profile fixed rear sight. The 38 Super slide requires some effort to run onto the frame, its fit quite tight and the barrel has not been fully fitted, not coming up and forward far enough for the slide and frame to fit flush at rear, and the slide fit does not allow for proper function of the hammer, it binding in the hammer cut on the right side of frame. The Colt Ace slide does indeed fit the gun once the ejector is removed, however barrel and bushing are not match-fitted, and it also does not fit flush at rear slide-to-frame, the rear face of the slide numbered “4550, the barrel numbered “4630”. All of these ride very nice presentation case with burgundy baize interior and combination lock on face (341). The lid of the case has the Department of the Air Force seal, the interior with a Department of Air Force coat of arms patch within the lid. On the interior we find a match bushing wrench, takedown tool from Stanley, satin finished Colt Super 38 Auto magazine and two-tone Ace magazine and there are boxes each of 45 ACP 1968 Match, Colt Super Cal. 38 Ball ammunition, and Olin Corporation standard velocity long rifle ammunition, there may be one or two cartridges missing, 22 LR appears full. There is an extensive dossier included, including the aforementioned letters from the Department of Air Force Chief gunsmith, a letter from a Texas attorney relating the presentation of such a set by Gen. Simler to Gen. Curtis LeMay in August 1968, on that such set Gen. Simler’s name was misspelled on the nameplate on the case lid, this was to be corrected, and LeMay left the set at Randolph Air Force Base in Gen. Simler’s care; this set does not have a presentation plaque on the lid. Oddly searches for the general find his name spelled with a single “M” while the Air Force correspondence uses dual letter “M” in the center of his name. The good general served two combat tours in European during World War II. On his second combat tour in July 1944, he was shot down but evaded capture and made his way back to the Allied lines in September 1944. Sadly General Simler met with a tragic early death at age 51, when along with his aide Captain Gil L. Gillespie, he was killed in the crash of a T-38 Talon jet trainer on takeoff at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, in September of 1972. The dossier includes a detailed investigation and description of said crash. A very nice and very complete set that are likely identical to the pistol prepared for General Simler, although it is unlikely he would’ve owned an Argentine Model 1927 and had Air Force gunsmith’s work on it. Were the 38 Super slide properly fitted it would be a very versatile and enjoyable set. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale (excluding Class III) when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. If an FFL dealer is sending an “agent” to pick up items, that person must be a bona fide, paid employee of the company with a W4 on file. Outside contractors cannot be used as pickup agents. A SIGNED LETTER FROM THE FFL STATING THIS FACT MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF PICK UP. The FFL Dealer will in turn be notified that a transfer was made to you as their agent. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm, on day of sale, provided the proper paperwork is completed and the transfer has been approved either through the N.H. State Police or the FBI NICS System, whichever is appropriate based upon the type of firearm(s) purchased. Non-resident individuals from states without waiting periods may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check. If you reside in a state with a waiting period, your items will need to be shipped to a dealer in your state. No modern handguns will be delivered to non-resident individuals. ABSENTEE/TELEPHONE/ON-LINE BIDDING • As a service to our buyers, Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will accept absentee bids from bidders who cannot attend the sale. Bidders without prior credit approval are required to submit a 20% deposit prior to bids being accepted (credit cards may be used for absentee deposits). Absentee bids will be bid in a competitive manner and an absentee bidder needs only to outbid another buyer i.e. bidding will not be opened at the maximum bid unless that is the next competitive bid. Because we do not open at the absentee bidder's top bid (unless that is the next competitive bid) there is a chance that the absentee bidder's bid may tie with a bidder using a different bidding method (live, Proxibid or telephone bidder). If an absentee bidder wishes to guard against this occurring, they may complete an absentee bid form with a "+" after the bid amount and forward that bid sheet to our office to be entered by Amoskeag. When a "+" is added after the bid amount, the bidder authorizes Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. to make one additional bid in order the break the tie. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges. Properly registered Amoskeag On-line bidders may use this service free of additional charges as an alternative to telephone or absentee bidding, at their election. On-line bidders should be aware that the sale sometimes proceeds at a very rapid pace and should plan their bidding strategies accordingly. • Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be held responsible for errors or omissions of any type that may occur during these services. • All absentee bids must be received by 8:00pm on the day prior to the auction. If you plan to attend the sale but will not be staying until the end and want to leave a bid on an item that will be sold after you leave, we must have those bids in by 8:00am on the morning of the sale. No bids will be accepted after that time. Please do not call the gallery once the auction has started (after 9:00am) as we will not be able to accept bids or make changes to bids. • Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will also accept telephone bids on a limited basis. Telephone bidding is reserved for seriously interested bidders. In order to bid by telephone, the bidder must be willing to pay at least the low estimate of the item being bid on. NOTE: Phone bids MUST be arranged by 5:00pm ON THURSDAY prior to the sale. • All absentee/telephone bidder invoices are issued by end of business on the Tuesday following the sale; all invoices are due upon receipt. Invoices are to be paid either by cash or check, or by credit cards listed above.
