The appointment is dated September 2, 1841, and signed by John Bigelow Secretary of the Commonwealth, along with what appears to be governor John Davis’s signature in the left margin below the impressed Commonwealth of Massachusetts seal (the seal is very light but can be seen), the ink pen writing has toned to a chocolate brown but it still fully readable. The rear of the appointment features a certification by Col. Kilburn Harwood that Ivers White did indeed appear before him and swear in on September 25, 1841, Harwood identified himself as Col. 9th Regiment 5th brigade it appears 3rd division, but the ink is a bit smeared. A bit of history on the principles involved in the document: Ivers White was a carriage and ornamental painter, built a local store, so he was obviously handy as a carpenter, and may have built more, was later the Postmaster, actually owning a mail stage route from Worcester, and was a deputy sheriff for Worcester County. Career politician John Bigelow was member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Secretary of State of Massachusetts, and most prominently as the twelfth Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts from 1849 to 1851. Col. Kilburn Harwood served as sheriff of Worcester County, served with the NH Militia ca 1821-1831, was appointed Major of Light Infantry by Gov. Everett of Massachusetts in 1837 and as per this document, was appointed Col. of 9th Reg. by Gov. Davis in 1841, later being honorably discharged at his request in 1843. The document rides in what is no doubt its original soft wood frame with a mahogany veneer, the frame measuring 17” x 13”. The original antique glass has many occlusions and air bubbles in it and the frame proper shows some small flakes from the veneer. An interesting Massachusetts Military Appointment in very fine condition.
