The metal surfaces have aged to an overall dull gray patina, the triggerguard is toning more to brown, with some silvering on the barrel forward of the front sight blade and on the high edges of the triggerguard, some scattered areas of fine pinprick pitting, some spots of wear toning to brown on the rear band, some overall scattered spots of light oxidation and light handling marks with some small impact marks on the left edge of the breech tang and left rear of receiver. There is a trace amount of original blue along the wood line and in the protected areas and a modest amount of original case-hardened colors remain on the breech tang and underside of the 1873-dated breechblock. The left side of the breech features a clear “V / P / (eagle head) / P” proof and the lockplate is properly marked with a Federal Eagle ahead of the hammer and with “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” below the thumbpiece. There is a short row of three very tiny punch marks on the lockplate to the right of the Federal Eagle. The American black walnut stock rates perhaps very good with a series of seven circular indentations on the left side of the buttstock and what appears to be “G.G.L.” written in smaller circular indentations on the right side of the buttstock and forend ahead of the action, a chip at the left of the breech tang, a shallow bruise on the left side of the wrist, and the typical overall dings and handling marks from military service. A softened “SWP / 1882” boxed inspector’s cartouche is on the left side of the action and a softened circled “P” firing proof is behind the triggerguard. There are some very tiny impact marks on the original front sight blade, the proper “R” marked Model 1879 buckhorn rear is intact along with the stacking and sling swivels, a correct cupped and slotted button-head ramrod with retaining swell and grasping grooves is included and the three-position tumbler and lock remain strong and crisp. This rifle falls within the serial number range provided by Springfield Research Service of guns issued to Company C of the 2nd Tennessee Volunteer Infantry in 1898, however this serial number is not listed.
