These beautifully made pistols are quite intriguing. The pistols feature graceful waterproof pans and roller frizzen springs, the springs themselves quite fancy, and we date the guns around to around 1825. Delincee was active in Amsterdam between 1809 and 1840. The barrels are by Johann Jakob Kuchenreuter and quite a bit earlier than the arms themselves, clearly being of very high quality and therefore re-purposed and utilized on this later pair of pistols. The barrels are round with flattened ribs on sides of breech with a flat sighting rib which is interrupted for two inches just ahead of breech to allow for silver inlaid engraving. The breech of barrels bears three of Kuchenreuter's touchmarks and inliad in silver ''JOH, JAC, KUCHENREUTER'', each numbered ''1'' and ''2''. The front sights are star-shaped silver and are nicely laid over the front tip of the rib. In addition to having the nice early barrels, the pistols were later fitted with an additional ingenious set of percussion locks by Isaac Riviere of London. The original flintlocks are nicely engraved with scroll and marked in script below pan ''Delincee / Amsterdam''. The pistols are stocked in a French style, not uncommon for Dutch pistols, and they are fitted with wonderfully engraved iron furniture. The sideplates are fancy in design and beautifully engraved in a spider-web type pattern. The triggerguard and tailpipe have opposing fancy engraved finials with the bow of guard showing a standing dog. The buttcap has nice floral engraving around the outer edge with a seated image of the same dog engraved on the flat oval base. The barrel tangs are nicely engraved and are each fitted with single standing and two folding, leaf sights. The ramrod thimbles are barrel-shaped and are finely knurled front and rear. The pistols feature their original adjustable set triggers and retain their original bone tipped ebony ramrod with iron worms on opposite ends with nicely threaded protective iron covers. Each pistol has a silver shield-shaped escutcheon atop of the wrist, each is nicely decoratively engraved but show no initials. The second set of percussion locks by Riviere are very clever as they have tiny bolsters that direct the spark directly into the touchholes, so no alterations are necessary for the pistols to be used with the percussion, or flint locks interchangeably. The percussion locks are nicely engraved and are each marked ''RIVIERE LONDON'' with ''Patent'' scrolled across the top of each hammer. These locks are beautifully made utilizing very neatly converted flintlock plates and with beautifully shaped hammers. The pistols remain in very fine condition with the barrels and furniture retaining 90 - 95% original blue with most loss being in area of touchholes. The flint locks retain lots of nice original color case hardening which has taken on a lovely light plum brown color. The percussion locks actually show more wear but are also excellent with about 50% original color case-hardened finish remaining with the balance blending with a pleasing smooth gray patina. The checkered walnut stocks rate excellent with 95% original oil finish overall with crisp edges and sharp checkering. The pistols come in their original Riviere-supplied case with maker label. The guns fit perfectly and their accessories include a nice brass bush pattern flask, nipple wrench with vent pick in its rosewood handle, a cleaning rod, the spare locks and some flints. The condition of the case is very good to excellent with blue baize lining. Kuchenreuter was active from 1709 - 1783; Delincee was active from 1809 - 1840 and Riviere was active from 1818 - 1851. Riviere was best known for his patented ''guns without locks'' which is prominently touted on the bottom of his makers label. A fabulous, wonderful quality, and very interesting pair of European flintlock pistols.
