The barrels show a nice, slightly fading, damascus brown pattern their full length with wear to pewter on the sharp edges, each pistol showing some light oxidation or very slight pinprick pitting for about 3'' on the right barrel flat nearer the muzzle. There are simple silver bladed front sights in shallow dovetails with a small v-notch tombstone rear sight atop the tang. Each barrel flat is inlaid in gold ''LePage Arq.er Du Roi.'', in sunken etched panel with light scroll at each end, numbered in turn ''1'' and ''2''. The breeches are unadorned but retain all of their original color case-hardening, as do the lightly engraved tangs, the breeches with a single inlaid platinum band, the nipple bolsters with platinum blowout plugs and graceful swirling cap deflectors. Each lock is maker marked and shows light scroll engraving which continues onto the hammer; each exhibits vibrant color case-hardening as do the lovely single spur triggerguards, also with light tasteful open scroll. The stocks are highly figured French walnut and rate excellent, each with a lovely, crisp, carved scallop-shell motif at their noses. Barrels are retained with single wedges through oval German silver escutcheons and the butts have lovely acanthus leaf carved horn caps, each with a case-hardened steel crown which is lightly engraved; there is a bit of insect damage on each of the horn caps but it is unobtrusive. The grips are flat-top checkered and the left side of pistol No. 1 shows an antique repair through a crack in the highly figured wood at the left stock flat (it has re-cracked with the years but could be arrested by a good wood man). The locks are crisp and mechanically functional and each trigger is a single-set. The arms come cased in a lovely mahogany veneer presentation case with French fitted purple baize interior with a complete complement of accessories. While not maker marked on the interior of the lid, it is clear that this case has been with the guns since they were brand-new, as have the accessories. The pistols are serial numbered on the underside of the barrels, the left edge of the stock near the breech, and the bullet mould is numbered to the arms as well. The mould retains nearly all its original color case-hardening, there is a nice ribbed push-button flask, mahogany loading and cleaning rods, mahogany handled nipple wrench and loading mallet and a brass powder measure with mahogany knob (knob slightly chipped). The lid of the case shows some light drying cracks from the years and has brass border around its periphery along with a brass presentation plaque at its center which reads ''donne' par le Rynce Royal/Comp de Compiegne/1836'', basically (roughly) ''... given by the Prince (SIC ''Rynce'') of the Royal Camp of Compiegne''. The tradition of military encampments at Compiègne resumed with Louis-Philippe (King, 1830 to 1848). The encampment of 1833 had 7,000 men under the command of the Duke of Orleans and in August of 1834, the numbers were increased. In 1836, another 25,000 men and 5,000 horses were encamped there; partly on the road to Paris, and the other on the plain of Choisy. A very lovely pair of pistols overall that appear to have seen little or no use, the nipples indeed retain all their original fire blue and there appears to be no oxidation on the underside of the cap skirts within the hammers. There will be a $35.00 charge for all returned checks. • A 17.5% Buyer’s Premium will be added to all purchases regardless of price with a 2.5% discount when paying with check or cash . This premium is to be paid as part of the purchase price. • Customers without prior credit approval who intend on making purchases in excess of $10,000 must provide credit information such as a bank letter of credit prior to bidding. GUIDELINES FOR FIREARM PURCHASES • All Federal, State and Local firearms laws will be observed. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm on day of sale providing the proper paperwork is filled out and the transfer has been approved either through the NH State Police or the FBI NICS System. While most NICS and State approvals are immediate, approvals could take up to 3 days. Most non-residents may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check; modern handguns will need to be shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale. Bidders should be familiar with their local and state laws as Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be responsible for any parties purchasing items which may not be possessed in, or shipped, to their state of residence. CLASS III WEAPONS • Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. is a licensed Class III S.O.T. and handles transfers of Machineguns, Suppressors, A.O.W.’s and short barreled rifles and shotguns in-house. Class III invoices are expected to be paid upon receipt, no transfer paperwork will be executed until the invoice is paid. Know that class III transfers take a good deal of time for Federal approval and we are at their mercy. Firearms are marked as follows: ANTIQUE - no paperwork required C&R - for firearms that fall under the ATF Curio & Relics licensing and if purchased by a person with a “C&R License” no paperwork is required. NOTE: Items that meet the age requirements but have been altered from their original configuration may NOT be delivered on a C&R License. Firearms that are not marked with one of these notations are considered to be “MODERN” and all proper paperwork is required unless you are an FFL Dealer. ABSENTEE/TELEPHONE/ON-LINE BIDDING • As a service to our buyers, Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will accept absentee bids from bidders who cannot attend the sale. Bidders without prior credit approval are required to submit a 20% deposit prior to bids being accepted (credit cards may be used for absentee deposits). Absentee bids will be bid in a competitive manner and an absentee bidder needs only to outbid another buyer i.e. bidding will not be opened at the maximum bid unless that is the next competitive bid. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges. Properly registered Amoskeag On-line bidders may use this service free of additional charges as an alternative to telephone or absentee bidding, at their election.
