This example very well may be the only extant Model 1904 pistol as extensive research turns up only drawings of the model. This pistol is a member of the Roth-Krnka developmental design spanning the models of 1895, 1897, 1899, 1904 and finally the 1907 which was adopted by the Austro-Hungarian military. This pistol closely resembles the 1907 and only small changes were made between this and the adopted model, the major difference being the presence of a manual safety lever on the left side of the frame which was ultimately omitted in favor of just a heavy two-stage double action trigger pull. The safety lever interacts with a rather complicated arrangement involving a spring-powered fly assembly fixed to the striker; it is nevertheless a very positive safety mechanism but was apparently deemed unnecessary. There are a number of other smaller but notable differences in the nosecap wedge style, smaller recoil spring diameter, grips and lack of an auxiliary bolt hold-open. The mechanical aspects of the pistol are otherwise identical utilizing a rotating barrel, two-stage double action trigger, out-of-battery safety lever on the bolt body and stripper clip-fed internal box magazine. The pistol itself remains in very nice condition retaining about 90% original blue with spots of oxidation staining scattered throughout, high edge wear, a few small dings on the frame rib and near the right side of the rear sight and overall toning to a pleasant plum patina under bright light. The bolt is still mostly bright and the extractor and cartridge release lever show strong straw color. The top frame flat is marked with Georg Roth's ''GR'' monogram, ''PATENT'' and the serial number and the sideplate is stamped ''M. II'', the significance of this marking is unknown but may denote either a small change made in this example (Model II) or perhaps indicates it as the second pistol of this model made. There are no military acceptance stamps and normally the Austro-Hungarian military would still stamp test or trial guns, it is of course highly likely that this model was tested before the military made its final recommendations. The checkered walnut grips are stamp-numbered ''163 / II'' to the gun and remain in very good plus condition showing scattered spots of light oil soaking, a spot of small dings at the base of the right panel and some minor warping of the left panel. All of the serialized parts are matching; the barrel is un-numbered, a practice carried on into the 1907 production model. The action is mechanically functional although the recoil spring is quite weak causing the action to move rearward as the trigger is pulled but this would likely be an easy repair. It is evident that a continuous serial number range was utilized for experimental or trial models as there is a known example of a .45 caliber Krnka pistol serial #120 with identical frame rib markings and grip checkering style although that pistol utilized the earlier hammer firing mechanism rather than a striker. This important pistol would make a truly superb addition to the finest collection of early semi-automatic or military arms.
