Daw of London Click image to enlarge PreviousNext Lot closed - Sold Price (Including Buyer`s Premium):$18,400 Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000 Description Description: .442 caliber, 32 1/2'' round barrel with octagon breech and a bright excellent bore. This rifle is truly remarkable not only for its condition but even more so for its elegance and quality. The barrel is round with an octagonal breech and also with a beautiful flattened sighting plane its entire length. One of the more unusual and certainly most striking features of this rifle is the convex shaped lockplate with stock flat that follows the rounded profile. The stock flat opposite the lock also follows this same profile showing a well-defined edge to the front and dropper point to the rear with the center section blending to a rounded contour around the entire belly of the stock and continuing through the lock. The top of the barrel is engraved ''GEORGE H. DAW'' to the rear of the sight and ''57 THREADNEEDLE ST. LONDON''. The lock is engraved in lovely 19th century scroll with ''G.H. DAW'' engraved beneath the bolster. The bolster shows full coverage scroll as does the top tang which is formed in an elegant fashion. The triggerguard is engraved in scroll with its front finial terminating in a beautifully detailed pineapple motif. The round patchbox shows the same lovely scroll as does the buttplate tang, steel gripcap with trapdoor, wedge escutcheons and tailpipe. The condition is stellar with the rifle showing no evidence of ever being fired. The barrel retains 98% original brown finish with brilliant damascus pattern showing its entire length. The lock, breech and tang all show 98% original vivid color case-hardened finish while the triggerguard is equal in coverage but with slight fading. The patchbox and buttplate show 95% original color case-hardening. The stock is of figured English walnut and features checkering on its steel capped pistolgrip and forend. The checkering is moderately coarse with handsome rounded borders at front and rear. The stock has a graceful shadowline cheekpiece and the forend terminates in a horn tip. The stock rates excellent with 97% original finish remaining and with just a few scattered light handling marks with serial number ''4218'' neatly stamped in toeline. The rifle is sighted with a windage adjustable globe front and folding rear barrel mounted ''GEORGE H. DAW'S / PATENT 117'' marked sight. The lock has a forward mounted sliding safety and is extremely crisp. The rifle comes cased in its original brass trimmed oak case with an extensive assortment of accessories. They include a brass mould with hollow base insert and angled pouring channel which is numbered to the gun, a very fine quality flask with pivoting adjustable charger, (2) ebony handled turnscrews, nipple wrench along with nipple and nipple recess cleaning tools, a case-hardened main spring vise, a package of Eley .442 bullet patches, a tin of .442 diameter lubricators, a capping tool, three-piece cleaning rod, pewter oiler, a neat Hawksley spring loaded nipple cleaner and combination whistle and a leather sling. The interior lid of case shows Daw's maker label with hand written sighting instructions. The interior of the case is excellent, the exterior is very good plus with a drying crack across the lid which is still very sound. This rifle represents the very best in quality, style and condition. An absolutely stunning percussion rifle which would be right at home within the world's finest antique arms collections.
