This is an extremely fine example of these rare and much sought-after American rifles. These rifles were built as ruggedly as the men who carried them, designed to be potent and reliable and made to withstand the harsh life on the frontier. Most show hard use and their attrition rate was high, this one remains as one of the finest known examples. The top of the barrel is marked ''S. HAWKEN ST. LOUIS'' with the last couple letters beneath the rear sight. The inside of the lockplate is neatly stamped ''T. GIBBONS'', Thomas Gibbons was a St. Louis gunsmith and lock maker with a shop at 187 Franklin Avenue. Samuel Hawken and Thomas Gibbons were both in St. Louis for a short period of time as Gibbons came to St. Louis in 1859 and Hawken moved to Denver that same year which helps narrow the date of manufacture of this rifle. The rifle is stocked in maple which shows lovely vertical grain from forend tip to buttplate. The stock is iron mounted with the exception of the frame of patchbox which is German silver and a large silver monogram plate on the cheekpiece and another small one in the toeline of stock, both remain plain. The triggerguard is iron with nicely stylized tangs to front and rear and in typical Hawken style with oblong loop at rear of guard. The rifle is equipped with adjustable double set triggers which function properly. The barrel shows an even gray patina overall remaining very smooth and free of pitting. The barrel shows some old vise impressions here and there, they are minor and very likely from the period of use. The lock is a bit darker than the barrel and has a wonderful untouched look with a smooth pleasing color. The stock looks to have been lightly cleaned along the way and has lovely color and grain, furniture still fits well and edges remain well-defined. The wrist is checkered and that checkering remains in excellent condition. The rifle is sighted with a low-profile Rocky Mountain silver front and simple open rear with sliding elevator. There is a single period hole toward the rear of the top tang which presumably held a tang sight at some point. This rifle was awarded the prestigious NRA ''Ten Best Weapons'' Silver Medallion at the 142nd NRA Annual Meeting in Houston in 2013. Medallion No. 515 and its accompanying certificate are included with the rifle. It was also featured in a video clip on ''Curator's Corner'' with Phillip Schreier, Senior Curator of the National Firearms Museum along with Jim Supica, Director of the National Firearms Museum along with Cletus Klein discussing the rifle in detail. This award-winning rifle has been publicly displayed and vetted and will be offered for sale at public auction for the very first time. Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. reserves the right to demand cash or hold merchandise until funds are collected in full. There will be a $35.00 charge for all returned checks. • A 17.5% Buyer’s Premium will be added to all purchases regardless of price with a 2.5% discount when paying with check or cash . GUIDELINES FOR FIREARM PURCHASES • All Federal, State and Local firearms laws will be observed. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm on day of sale providing the proper paperwork is filled out and the transfer has been approved either through the NH State Police or the FBI NICS System. While most NICS and State approvals are immediate, approvals could take up to 3 days. Most non-residents may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check; modern handguns will need to be shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale. Bidders should be familiar with their local and state laws as Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be responsible for any parties purchasing items which may not be possessed in, or shipped, to their state of residence. CLASS III WEAPONS • Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. is a licensed Class III S.O.T. and handles transfers of Machineguns, Suppressors, A.O.W.’s and short barreled rifles and shotguns in-house. Class III invoices are expected to be paid upon receipt, no transfer paperwork will be executed until the invoice is paid. Know that class III transfers take a good deal of time for Federal approval and we are at their mercy. Firearms are marked as follows: ANTIQUE - no paperwork required C&R - for firearms that fall under the ATF Curio & Relics licensing and if purchased by a person with a “C&R License” no paperwork is required. NOTE: Items that meet the age requirements but have been altered from their original configuration may NOT be delivered on a C&R License. Firearms that are not marked with one of these notations are considered to be “MODERN” and all proper paperwork is required unless you are an FFL Dealer. ABSENTEE/TELEPHONE/ON-LINE BIDDING • As a service to our buyers, Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will accept absentee bids from bidders who cannot attend the sale. Bidders without prior credit approval are required to submit a 20% deposit prior to bids being accepted (credit cards may be used for absentee deposits). Absentee bids will be bid in a competitive manner and an absentee bidder needs only to outbid another buyer i.e. bidding will not be opened at the maximum bid unless that is the next competitive bid. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges.
