The vast majority of Model 1849 Kammerbushe rifles, often called ''Garibaldi rifles,'' in the U.S. were converted from tube-lock to percussion for use in the Civil War. This interesting example has been converted to flint by attaching a pan, cock and frizzen to the original lockplate. The barrel, and forend cap retain about 75% later added blue which is toning to a streaky blue-gray patina under direct light while the lock has aged to dark gray with light softened pinprick pitting overall along with some scattered light handling marks and tiny spots of old light oxidation toning to brown. The brass triggerguard, buttplate, sideplate and thimble have aged to a lightly-tarnished mustard patina with some scattered light handling marks and a few short streaks of darker discoloration on the tang of the buttplate. The top flat of the barrel is marker-marked ''FERD:FRUWIRTH'' for Ferdinand Früwirth of Vienna, the left quarter flat bears a crisp ''13'' and softened ''114'' and the left features various proof and inspection marks. The original lockplate is clearly marked ''852'' denoting the date 1852 along with an Austrian (eagle) proof behind the cock while the buttplate is marked with ''13 / B'' and the triggerguard displays a raised ''F'' in sunken cartouche denoting Früwirth. The European beechwood stock with left side cheekpiece rates very good plus as lightly cleaned with an old added finish, a short hairline crack behind the upper tang, a narrow abrasion on the right side of the forend behind the upper band spring and various minor handling marks from the years. There are no visible cartouches. The upper sling swivel is intact, the lower is missing with the original eyelet intact and turned 90 degrees. The bayonet lug and sights are present, a correct cupped tulip-head ramrod with threaded end is included and the action is strong and crisp. Austrian Model 1849 rifles saw a lot of action and this one could likely tell a few stores.
