The barrel displays a streaky blend of reapplied blue and dark gray patinas with some scattered areas of fine pitting and old light oxidation and a few light handling marks toning to gray. The triggerguard is toning to a brown patina with a few light handling marks while the receiver, loading gate and sideplate display a pewtery case-hardened patina as lightly cleaned long ago with some traces of reapplied blue on the gate along with some tiny contaminant bubbling, some areas of faint pinprick pitting and a few tiny spots toning to a brown patina overall. The bolt is toning to a dull gray patina with some fine pitting along the right side, light staining on the bolt handle and some areas of old dried lubricant, and the extractor has been properly updated to 1896-specifications with a hold-open pin to mate with the notch relieved on the receiver. The receiver is marked ''U.S. / 1894. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY.'' along with the serial number. The Model 1896 rifle stock has been nicely-modified for sporting use and rates very good as refinished with a couple well-done wood-filled repairs in the right side of the buttstock, a few minor cracks around the action, the cleaning rod channel and the holes for the rear sling swivel on the toeline have been filled and there are some scattered light handling marks from the years. The stock is without cartouches and there is no handguard. The added Pachmayr White Line ventilated pad has hardened and collapsed with the heel area missing and various cracks throughout. The ladder on the Model 1896 rear sight is bent to the left and the front sight is equipped with a Redfield blade which is missing its bead. The action of this early Krag rifle is very smooth and appears to function well mechanically.
