This is a very handsome British double percussion gun once owned by Philadelphia attorney Jonathan Dickinson Sergeant, the Sergeant family were Philadelphia ''blue-bloods'' going back to colonial days. The barrels retain a lovely gray and brown twist damascus pattern their full length, as strong on the barrels as it is on the rib, showing the tiniest bit of fading at the muzzles with silvery breeches showing a single inlaid platinum band, light open scroll and platinum blowout plugs. The rib is marked ''Westley Richards 170 New Bond St., London'' and is sighted with a simple bead front and the barrels are British proofed and serial numbered matching on their underside. The tang shows the same nice quality scroll and is a pewter patina with a bit of light brown speckling. The lockplates are very nice showing perhaps 50-60% color case-hardening, muting a bit more on the right plate, each maker marked and with light sprays of excellent quality tight scroll which continue onto the flats of the beveled edge hammers; each hammer nose neatly engraved in a gryphon-like face. There are dual ramrod thimbles showing damascus pattern and an engraved tailpipe with a lightly chiseled extension. The long straight tang triggerguard shows strong remnants of original blue on the bow, with excellent quality tight scroll; the front of the triggerplate chiseled and engraved in a pineapple finial extension. The smooth steel buttplate provides a 14 1/2'' length of pull with nice scroll atop its tang. The English walnut stock rates very fine with some nice grain figure, coarse checkering and the expected light dings and handling marks that come from a field-used arm. The barrel is retained by a single wedge through German silver escutcheons and the silver oval monogram plate along the toeline is neatly engraved ''J.D. Sergeant/Philada''. The locks are crisp, in time, and mechanically functional and the original ramrod with screw-off wad pull end is included. The arm comes cased in its original walnut makers cased with accessories and makers label on the interior of the lid, ink pen serial numbered to the gun. The interior green baize lining appears to be original in every respect and included therein is a leather shot pouch, leather covered Hawksley powder flask with fireproof screw-off top and four position charger, nipple wrench, leather pouch with spare nipples, a number of cleaning implements, two small japanned tins, one with percussion caps, the other with tallow and a small button hook. What are likely original bore mops are included as well. The flask shows a bit of separation of the seam stitching along its bottom edge, and a bit of a verdigris at the top collar. The case itself rates very good with brass bands affixed to the lid in an effort to stymie age cracking from drying. It features heavy brass corners and Mr. Sergeant's name is engraved in a plaque on the lid; the key is included. Mr. Sergeant was an attorney in Philadelphia, graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1842 and being admitted to the bar in 1845. His grandfather by the same name was a member of the Continental Congress, member of the New Jersey Provincial Congress and one of the framers of New Jersey's constitution, eventually becoming the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's first Attorney General. A very lovely, and doubtless very usable shotgun from this quality British maker that was clearly very well-cared-for by this Philadelphia gentleman. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale (excluding Class III) when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. If an FFL dealer is sending an “agent” to pick up items, that person must be a bona fide, paid employee of the company with a W4 on file. Outside contractors cannot be used as pickup agents. A SIGNED LETTER FROM THE FFL STATING THIS FACT MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF PICK UP. The FFL Dealer will in turn be notified that a transfer was made to you as their agent. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm, on day of sale, provided the proper paperwork is completed and the transfer has been approved either through the N.H. State Police or the FBI NICS System, whichever is appropriate based upon the type of firearm(s) purchased. Non-resident individuals from states without waiting periods may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check. If you reside in a state with a waiting period, your items will need to be shipped to a dealer in your state. No modern handguns will be delivered to non-resident individuals. All modern handguns purchased by non-resident individuals will need to be delivered to or shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale.
