  • Description
    Description:

serial #131062, 45 ACP, 5" Colt barrel with an excellent bore showing very slight streaks of frosting at the breech end. This pistol falls into a range of serial numbers that are somewhat of mystery as they do not appear in Colt legers, shipping records or Government procurement records but they obviously received them as they do appear in the Springfield Armory Research Service material (sadly this gun was not in there). The metal surfaces of this interesting gun retain about 95% original "Army Black" finish, the grip safety and flat mainspring housing are toning to gray with streaks of strong blue remaining, light scattered feathering on the slide and high edge wear. There are a few light assembly and handling marks but the gun remains in excellent condition. All parts appear correct for the period but the magazine catch appears to be a replacement. The grips are factory double diamond checkered walnut in wonderful condition, the left panel is Springfield manufactured and the right Colt. The serial number range of this pistol was originally assigned to Springfield Armory but was reassigned to Colt when Springfield ceased pistol production to concentrate on rifles. Serial numbers between 128,617 and 129,616 are Springfield numbers and are found in Colt's legers but from there to serial no. 133,186 they are not in the factory nor the Government records. The pistols in this serial number range usually have no assembler numbers and lack final acceptance marking on the frame. It is theorized Colt used left over Government frames to assemble them and no final acceptance mark was required as they were already Government property. This gun follows those observations. Frank Hosmer's "H" correctly appears on the top of the barrel, rear of the slide and on the frame above the disconnector hole at the 12 o'clock position. A second "H" with serifs is present on the lower right of the frame at the 5 o'clock position from the disconnector hole and is believed to be a Colt in-house inspection mark. All of the provisional inspection marks by Hosmer are without serifs and as was occasionally observed on guns in this range a "G" for Government contract was applied by Colt is located at the 6 o'clock position. To muddy the waters even further Charles Clawson in Colt .45 Service Pistols indicates Springfield armory reported they assembled close to 1,000 pistols in 1921 and some of the frames may have been in the 127,978 – 133,186 serial number range but kept no records. One thing that is not a mystery is this pistol's fine condition. It includes a two-tone Colt magazine with lanyard loop on the welded baseplate. There were not many guns assembled in this "mystery" range and finding one in as good a condition as this one will be difficult. A great collecting opportunity.
