The barrel of this lovely rifle retains about 96-97% original blue with most of the loss due to some scattered light freckling, a few light dings along the edges and some faint toning to plum-brown under bright light. The action retains about 97% wonderful vibrant case-hardened colors showing some areas of very faint muting mostly along the lower tang and a little bit of mild gray-brown speckling. The buttplate retains about 90% vibrant colors toning to silvery gray around the edges while the lever is a smoky gray case-hardened patina and the nosecap is an attractive silvery case-hardened patina. The breechblock retains about 98% original bright blue and the remaining small parts retain strong fire blue, the finish on the rear sight particularly brilliant. The E. Remington & Sons barrel address remains crisp and clear and the barrel is matching the frame. The checkered round knob pistolgrip walnut buttstock and smooth forend remain in very fine condition retaining a healthy amount of original oil finish showing some lightly chipped points, a very tiny drying crack forming at the upper tang and some scattered light dings. Interestingly it appears the gun was struck with some birdshot as there are about eight small dents on the left side butt and bottom of the pistolgrip and one on the comb line that still has a piece of lead shot embedded in it! The stocks and buttplate are matching the frame and the fit remains excellent. The rifle is sighted with a standard sporting rear sight, small German silver blade front and an unmarked period tang sight with wide aperture disc and no range markings. The action seems to function well mechanically. This rifle is pictured on pages 48 and 49 in Remington's No. 3 Hepburn by Rowe, there is a typographical error as the serial number is listed as "6390" but it is undoubtedly this rifle and admittedly the "2" on the tang could be misconstrued as a "3". The author notes the unusual tang sight and speculates that it is not a Remington factory offering. A wonderful example of these fine Remington sporting rifles.
