Catalog Auction info Auction #128 - Two-Day Sale, November 21st & 22nd (#128) 11/21/2020 9:00 AM EST Closed Starts Ending 11/21/2020 9:00 AM EST Auction Info Lot #279Colt U.S. Model 1873 Single Action Army Artillery Model Revolver Click image to enlarge PreviousNextSimilar Items Lot closed - Sold Price (Including Buyer`s Premium):$4,200 Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000 Description Description: serial #5841, 45 Colt, 5 1/2'' barrel with a bright very good bore which shows strong rifling with scattered oxidation and scattered light pitting, a few spots near the breech may be a bit more moderate. The barrel and ejector rod housing show about 98% later, excellent quality blue with some very light muzzle wear, a few very light handling marks and the barrel address remaining fully readable. The cylinder retains perhaps 85-90% later quality blue, with wear to pewter in spots, some scattered light oxidation and a few spots of light pinprick pitting. The triggerguard, frontstrap and backstrap all show the same excellent quality restored blue, efforts have been made on the triggerguard to match the factory polish patterns, the backstrap shows some wear at the butt and atop the knuckle. The frame retains about 97% later good quality color case-hardening, likely cyanide and not bone and charcoal however, as the colors are not quite correct. They are brilliant nonetheless and all of the screws are replacements or have been neatly dressed and have bright blue. The left side ''U.S.'' marking remains strong with Ainsworth ''A'' on the underside of the barrel and one on the cylinder which is rather deeply struck and may be a later addition, the cylinder is clearly numbered to the gun properly in the appropriate font which matches the characters on the arm perfectly. The triggerguard stamping shows some characters that do not match fonts precisely, the numeral 5 and 4 are slightly different, the balance of the figures match however, and inspection with a loupe reveals that the numeral 8 is over stamped an identical number ''8'' beneath, it may be that this number was merely re-stamped over the old number that was obliterated during the refinish. The smooth one piece walnut grip rates very good as refinished many years ago, there is no discernible number within the backstrap inletting and no remnants of cartouche due to the refinish and sanding. As-mentioned numbers are matching on barrel, frame, cylinder, backstrap and now, triggerguard, which appears to have been original anyway. A quick check of Springfield Research Service shows no hits around this arm's serial number, but interestingly 5740 was issued to Troop I, 7th Cavalry in 1888, 5743 was issued to Co. H, 7th Cavalry, and is listed as ''damaged'' June 25, 1876 (the day of the battle) and number 5946, 105 numbers away, was ''turned in'' by Sioux Whirling White Head in September 1876. The left side of the triggerguard is slightly proud of the frame, and slightly proud at its fit with the butt, the arm does function properly mechanically albeit lockup is a bit loose. An early arm, manufactured in 1874, this remains a very attractive example post-refinish and undoubtedly a veteran of the Indian Wars.
