Pictured in the Winchester Book Click image to enlarge PreviousNextSimilar Items Lot closed - Sold Price (Including Buyer`s Premium):$20,400 Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000 Description Description: serial #2260, 44 Henry RF, 24" octagon barrel with a good bore showing some scattered light pitting and oxidation with some bright areas and otherwise strong rifling throughout. The barrel of this rifle has mostly toned to a mix of pleasant deep gray and plum-brown patina showing some scattered remnants of old minor oxidation staining, some old dings near the front sight and along the barrel sleeve and a 1" area of moderate old scratches or scuff marks on the left side barrel sleeve. The lever and hammer are a mild gray patina, the lever showing some scattered areas of darker plum-brown and the hammer with some smoky colors present along the protected front face. The follower stop screw on the left side of the barrel is a replacement, a number of the screw heads show light slot wear and the trigger spring still retains a few flakes of bright fire blue. The barrel address is the correct smaller style and remains remarkably crisp and clear, the serial number as well albeit the "0" has been poorly struck by the factory. The action and rounded buttplate have toned to a very nice rich ocher patina showing some scattered light dings and mild handling marks, the dings a bit more noticeable along the bottom of the cartridge lifter and top right edge. The sideplates show very slight gaps and are a tad proud at their forward top corners, the edges of the frame otherwise quite nice and well-defined. The left side of the frame shows a lightly scratched name that appears to be "G Gundlach" and the inside of the right sideplate is also scratched "A E WG / 1887". The smooth walnut "perch belly" stock remains in very good condition showing remnants of original finish with some scattered old abrasions along the left side, a couple smoothed-over shallow old chips and a couple of small very thin cracks where the stock meets the frame and at the upper tang, these being very unobtrusive. The stock fit at the forward corners of the upper tang shows some very thin gaps while the fit at the buttplate and lower tang is excellent and the "Henry bump" on the left side below the sling swivel is still perceptible. The stock is correctly stamp-numbered matching the rifle along the upper tang inlet and the buttplate is matching stamped on the inside toe. As-is correct for an earlier rifle, all of the stock and buttplate screws are matching and the heads appropriately machined to fit the contours of the arm. The inside lower tang is matching and also stamped with an "N" and "C", no external inspector stamp or punch mark is visible. The barrel and barrel sleeve are matching each other by assembly number "890". The original sights and sling swivels are intact and the action seems to function well mechanically. This rifle is pictured in The Winchester Book by Madis on page 32 and is noted as then being part of the Fred Miles collection, also at that time the rear sight was located in the receiver dovetail. Also included is a nicely made wooden plaque with brass plate engraved with the particulars of the rifle and a hand-written letter by Winchester collector Norman A. Vegely in which he describes the general features of the rifle, noting it is somewhat unusual for an early rifle to be equipped with sling swivels and that is was also once part of the Alvin Roberts collection. Credit card purchases are limited to $50,000.00 per customer, per auction. Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. reserves the right to demand cash or hold merchandise until funds are collected in full. There will be a $35.00 charge for all returned checks. A 17.5% Buyer’s Premium will be added to all purchases regardless of price with a 2.5% discount when paid with check, cash or wire transfer. No items are to be removed from our facility until paid for in full by the purchaser. GUIDELINES FOR FIREARM DELIVERIES All Federal, State and Local firearms laws will be strictly adhered to. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale (excluding Class III) when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. If an FFL dealer is sending an “agent” to pick up items, that person must be a bona fide, paid employee of the company with a W4 on file. Outside contractors cannot be used as pickup agents. A SIGNED LETTER FROM THE FFL STATING THIS FACT MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF PICK UP. The FFL Dealer will in turn be notified that a transfer was made to you as their agent. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm, on day of sale, provided the proper paperwork is completed and the transfer has been approved either through the N.H. State Police or the FBI NICS System, whichever is appropriate based upon the type of firearm(s) purchased. Non-resident individuals from states without waiting periods may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check. If you reside in a state with a waiting period, your items will need to be shipped to a dealer in your state. No modern handguns will be delivered to non-resident individuals. All modern handguns purchased by non-resident individuals will need to be delivered to or shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale.
