The metal surfaces of this handsome rifle retain about 95-96% original blue showing some mild high edge wear, thinning along the bolt knob and some scattered light handling marks. The bolt body remains mostly bright showing some mild gray freckling and all markings remain intact and strong with the serial number properly stamped along the right side rear receiver (sans the "W" prefix). The scope is a correct 1918 model by Periscopic Prism Co. Ltd. and is matching the rifle. The scope body and objective bell appear to have been arsenal-refinished, retaining about 95% rust blue showing some scattered brown freckling, and some light pitting throughout the objective bell that is blued-over. A small broad arrow has been engraved atop the objective bell post-finishing and the brass fittings retain about 95% black enamel finish showing overall light flakes toning to ocher brass. The smooth walnut stock and handguards remain in very fine condition showing some scattered light dings, handling marks and a small 3/4" repaired chip at the toe that shows some cracks reforming. They retain much of their arsenal oil finish, the stock is stamp-numbered to the rifle on the bottom ahead of the forward action screw and shows strong inspector marks and crisp "(Broad Arrow) (Star) / (IW) / PATT.14" on the right side butt. The stock disc is unmarked and the front volley sight hardware is still intact. All visibly marked parts appear to be of correct Winchester manufacture, strangely the correct fine-adjustment rear sight is numbered "45475", the number having been crossed-out, and the bolt is matching the receiver. The scope features a large single post with fine crosshair and the optics remain very good and serviceable showing some scattered light flakes and very mild discoloration. There are no visible import marks and the action seems to function well mechanically. Included is an original black leather sling and leather-trimmed canvas scope case. The sling is by Sheldon & Sons Ltd. dated 1914 and rates very good plus showing some mild crackling and staining. The canvas-covered scope case with leather fittings does not appear to be maker-marked but is stencil-numbered to the gun and remains in very good condition showing some overall mild staining, some scuffs and minor crackling along the leather straps and moderate verdigris along the studs. A lovely First World War sniper for the advanced martial collection, only Winchester was contracted to produce P.14 snipers for the British military.
