The barrels of this shotgun show a strong wide swirling damascus pattern throughout toning to a pleasant plum-brown patina and showing a few small areas of minor pinprick pitting along the side of the right barrel. The undersides of the barrels are stamped with period Birmingham black powder proofs, Hughes' "RH" initials and "ROSE PATENT", this in reference to an 1850 damascus-manufacturing patent by Aaron Rose. The patent breech shows some smoky remnants of case-hardening and is equipped with platinum blowout plugs, the cap deflectors are actually integral with the upper tang. The lockplates with early tube-style hammers also retain some very attractive hints of case-hardened colors lurking about and are mostly toning to a lovely mild gray patina. The lockplates are neatly marked "R. HUGHES." and are embellished with some lovely borderline engraving and fine English scrollwork as well as a wonderful little pair of partridges on the right lock and pheasant on the left. The tailpipe, triggerguard, upper tang and buttplate are also embellished with fine quality scrollwork and the bow of the guard with a handsome pair of game dogs. The triggerguard and buttplate tang show scattered flakes of bright blue having mostly toned to a deep plum-brown patina. The edges of the dual ramrod thimbles show slightly softened reeded edges, the hammer skirts also with a nice reeded edge and retaining a hint of fire blue and the wide hammer spurs very finely checkered. The checkered walnut stock remains in fine condition showing a few small chips and light crack along the right edge of the forend, light impact marks along either side of the butt, some other minor handling marks and areas darkened from the years. The checkering with mullered borders remains intact and is quite nice with just some small areas of compressed points and there is a blank silver shield-shaped monogram plate atop the wrist. The original ramrod is present, the right hammer screw appears to be a period replacement and both locks are strong and crisp. Robert Hughes started operating in Birmingham around 1855 and this is no doubt one of his earliest arms considering the hammers, that were already quite-a-ways out of style by 1855, and the Rose Patent barrel markings. A very handsome quality-made British double.
