Brancquaert Click image to enlarge PreviousNextSimilar Items Lot closed - Sold Price (Including Buyer`s Premium):$4,200 Estimate: $700 - $900 Description Description: serial #1682, 12 ga (2 3/4"), 29 1/2" nickel steel barrels both choked full with bright near excellent bores showing a little minor scoring and a few very small lightly raised dings in the left tube nearer the muzzle. This is a very attractive Belgian shotgun, the barrels retaining about 85-90% original thinning blue toning slightly to a nice plum patina, areas toning to pewter-gunmetal patina and scattered fine scratches. The barrels feature a nicely matted solid rib and the underside of the lug is engraved with a large "2" suggesting the arm was originally a multi-barrel set. The top lever and triggerguard retain about 90% original blue showing minor thinning and handling marks. The lockplates and frame have mostly toned to a silvery pewter case-hardened patina showing a hint of minor freckling and scattered areas of bold case-hardened colors in the protected areas. The action features sideclips, handsomely shaped bolsters and is embellished in nearly full coverage with wonderful foliate scrollwork, floral bouquets and banknote filigree borders. The bottom of the frame is neatly engraved in small lettering "L. BRANCQUAERT / BRUSSELS". The checkered straight grip deluxe walnut buttstock and forend with push button release remain in very fine condition, the buttstock perhaps very lightly and carefully cleaned long ago and are mostly devoid of finish, the butt showing a small scuff on its right side along with a few very light dings and handling marks here and there. The stock is very slightly cast-off, the checkering is mostly crisp with lovely double mullered borders along the buttstock along with handsome grain figure throughout. The forend is inlaid with a very nice gold "(Crown) / OL" monogram. Wood fit to the action remains excellent and the stock is fitted with a period solid red rubber “Pneumatic” buttpad that shows light wear. Other features include extractors, single silver bead front sight, rebounding hammers and articulated front trigger. Length-of-pull is just shy of 14 1/4" with drops of 1 3/4" and 2 1/2". Lock-up is solid with barrels on-face, lever rests right of center and the locks seem to function well mechanically. A very attractive and likely usable hammergun, Brancquaert was a high-end boutique retailer in Brussels and research indicates most of his arms were actually supplied by Defourny.
