Catalog Auction info Hybrid Auction #126 - May 30th, 2020 (#126) 05/30/2020 9:00 AM EDT Closed Starts Ending 05/30/2020 9:00 AM EDT Auction Info Lot #348Mahrholdt Bockbuchsflinte Austrian Over Rifle Combination Gun Click image to enlarge PreviousNextSimilar Items Lot closed - unsold Estimate: $800 - $1,200 Description Description: Description Update 05/29/2020: Lower barrel shows a slight bulge behind muzzle serial #2227, 5.6x52R (22 Savage Hi-Power) by 16 ga., 23 5/8” Krupp Laufstahl barrels, the lower choked extra full, both showing bright excellent bores. The barrels retain perhaps 80% original fading gray-blue showing even fading and some wear to pewter at the muzzles, showing light scroll engraving along the frame bolster flares. The frame and sideplates retain a similar amount of what appears to be later blue, close inspection of both suggesting that they were originally blue and not actually case-hardened. The sideplates and frame show light borderline engraving of very nice quality with light banknote filigree around the screws. The bolsters of the frame show nice chiseled oakleaf engraving which continues onto the top of the frame. The triggerguard shows the standing chamois trademark of Mahrholdt-Peterlongo. The checkered French walnut buttstock rates very good to perhaps fine, as neatly refinished many years ago, showing some stunning grain figure in the butt and a nice Austrian style left side European cheekpiece. The checkering is a bit filled with finish and the stock flats show dropper points at their rears. There is a crack to the rear of the pistolgrip, the arm experiencing a break completely through at this point, it appears as though an effective repair has been made and the crack will not currently flex. There is a somewhat moderate scar along the right side and the buttstock but it certainly could be made to go away by a wood man who knew his business. The three-piece forend rates very good as well showing an older refinish with some minor dings and handling marks reacquired. The length of pull to the grooved horn buttplate is 14” and there is a horn pistolgrip cap showing some light insect damage. Features include double triggers (front a single set), pin style cocking indicators, non-automatic safety and extractors. The arm is sighted with a silver bead front sight and manual flip-up v-notch rear with the rib featuring dual claw bases; no rings are present. The arm locks up with dual under bites and Kerstin crossbolts and is tight and on face. The “set” feature of the trigger does not always drop the hammer on the rifle barrel, which then also does not always re-cock, it is no doubt gummed up on the inside as it functions sporadically. The barrel is marked “R Mahrholdt & Sohn, this marking repeated in riband on left lockplate with “Innsbruck-Tirol” in riband on the right; “(Eagle) N” proofed post-Anschluss in November 1940. A handsome combination gun in a seldom seen configuration from this top-quality Austrian maker.
