The barrel is very lightly swamped and shows dual inlaid silver bands with a bit of geometric inlay and a silver star surrounding the front sight blade. The front blade itself is a scant iron blade with a four leaf rear, one standing, three folding. “Johan Pitner” is inlaid in silver between the patent breech and rear sight and there is a bit of geometric foliate decoration top, on the left and right diagonal flats. The barrel and tang are primarily a brown and mottled gray case-hardened patina, the barrel showing some strong remnants of original blue in the areas of the sights. The lockplate is unadorned but for some simple border engraving, the hammer fancier with light engraving and chiseling in a fancy dolphin or fish head motif. Very Czech in character, the arm has a flared brass nosecap and lightly engraved ramrod thimbles with a bold tailpipe with fleur-de-lis extension. The triggerguard has a very wide open front extension as well which is lightly engraved with light floral and foliate engraving on the very wide bow of the guard, and acorn finial rear extension behind the grip swirl. There is a simple sideplate which shows foliate engraving and a cupped brass buttplate with engraving around its edges and periphery and a chiseled and engraved tang extension with some foliate decoration. The wooden sliding door patchbox is bolstered in brass which is engraved around its periphery and has a small floral carving at its center. The European walnut stock rates very good to fine with checkering at forestock and grip area which is rather fine and in a wrap-around pattern. There are the expected light dings and handling marks, a small 3/4" crack in the right side of the wrist, the stock showing an old cleaning years ago which has softened some of the edges. There is a rounded left side shadowline cheekpiece which shows some acorn and oakleaf carving at its rear. There is a simple stud along the toeline for sling provision and an antique iron bail near the front ramrod thimble. The lock is dual-acting and the arm is equipped with double set triggers and seems to function properly mechanically. The wrist shows a later addition of a square socket for a diopter style sight which is no longer present. The interior of the patchbox shows a presentation plate from Mr. and Mrs. Mark Keith Benenson to Capt. Robert Lindquist of the liner SS Constitution, December 30, 1959, a gift to the captain of that American luxury liner on the occasion of his officiating the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Benenson aboard that vessel. 1959 was the Captain’s inaugural year as master of that vessel and her first year back afloat after a 6.5 million dollar refitting. After the good Captain went on to his heavenly reward the rifle was returned to the Benenson’s by his son. Johan Pitner is not readily identifiable although very early there were Pitners in Prague, this is likely a descendent. The ramrod is a later replacement. A fine and attractive rifle overall with an interesting presentation. (3B9284-12) {ANTIQUE} [Mark K.
