The barrel is drilled for a false muzzle, which is included, and matches the rifling perfectly, and what is likely the original short starter is included. The barrel shows nice open heavy damascus pattern its full-length and is sighted with a simple target globe front sight and an ornate u-notch rear which is adjustable for both windage and elevation. It is likely the front sight is a replacement during the period of use as it is somewhat spartan and there is a nickel silver windage scale in a dovetail just to the front of it, the current sight having no index pointer to utilize said scale however. The patent breech is very ornate and shows open flowing scroll and has left and right bolsters, as though the arm were to be a double barrel, each a mirror image of the other with the same nice scroll, the left side with a “dummy nipple” in place. The breech shows three inlaid gold bands and a small recessed Royal coat of arms consisting of a shield beneath a crown, inlaid in silver and “M A Gmeiner & Sohn in Altenburg” is inlaid in gold on the barrel, surrounded by open flowing silver inlaid scroll, this motif continues on the left and right diagonal flats. The arm has the expected right side lockplate and a left side dummy lockplate or sideplate. They, along with the generous top tang, exhibit some very good original color case-hardening, perhaps 50% present, the balance muted to a pleasing dull case-hardened patina. All three pieces show excellent quality open flowing scroll with fine background punch-dot shading, the plates stepped at their rear with scroll extensions. Right plate shows a recumbent doe, left with a recumbent stag, the tang with the hunter pursuing the quarry leaning against an old hollow tree, these inlaid in gold. Additionally the tang features an integral cylindrical stud about half-way down its length for a clamp-on long or mid-range aperture sight. The hammer itself is exquisite and deeply chiseled and pierced with a Romanesque face along its front leading edge showing inlaid gold accents, this fits neatly into a pivoting weighted safety just to the rear of the cap deflector. The nose of the hammer is deeply chiseled into a gryphon or serpent head with silver inlaid teeth and gold inlaid eyes. The triggerguard and ornate patchbox show similar original color case-hardening with the same wide open scroll on the front extension with the squarish triggerguard proper showing an inlaid hunting hound against a woodland backdrop and a lovely carved horn pistolgrip with delicate scroll at its rear, miraculously uncracked, unchipped after all the years. The patchbox is a long pendulum style with scroll on its extension and a running stag inlaid in gold, the ornate vignette surrounded by inlaid silver scroll; the buttplate tang is nicely engraved as well. The European walnut stock rates very fine to excellent with nearly all its original varnish and only very light handling marks here and there from the years and some age checks showing from drying. There is an ornate carved dogs head at the nosecap of the forearm accented by open flowing scroll. There is deep open flowing scroll and fine checkering at the wrist, with a generous left-side cheekpiece with carved scroll at each end. The left side of the butt shows an ornate hunting scene, deeply carved with two hunters, three downed deer and hounds, amidst a woodland scene. The underside of the forestock shows a light bit of carving surrounding a silver inlaid monogram plate with the initials “MGG”. The rifle is equipped with double set triggers and a dual-acting lock and appears to be mechanically functional in every respect. The right side of the stock above the wedge escutcheons shows an old crack which was very neatly repaired and is very unobtrusive and there is a later ramrod with horn tip present. The arm is cased in its original walnut veneer case with French fitted interior and accessories. Included within are the aforementioned false muzzle and starter, a very nice polished steel mainspring vise, turn screw, a short starter/loading mallet, a very nice Parisian two ounce powder flask with spring-loaded charger, nickel silver powder measure and wiping rod accessories. There is a mahogany handled turned screw and a “JS Improved” nickel capper and a professionally made Museum-quality reproduction tang sight to fit over the integral tang stud on the rifle. The new sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation and appears to be a faithful reproduction of a period sight. This arm comes with its silver NRA medallion numbered “493”, silver Certificate of Recognition, awarded during the hundred 140th annual meetings in 2011, numbered to the medallion, and naming the arm “MA Gmeiner & Sohn With Eight Gold Inlays” and small plastic NRA “10 Best Awards” tabletop plaque. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm, on day of sale, provided the proper paperwork is completed and the transfer has been approved either through the N.H. State Police or the FBI NICS System, whichever is appropriate based upon the type of firearm(s) purchased. Non-resident individuals from states without waiting periods may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check. If you reside in a state with a waiting period, your items will need to be shipped to a dealer in your state. No modern handguns will be delivered to non-resident individuals. All modern handguns purchased by non-resident individuals will need to be delivered to or shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state.
