Newton & Co. of London Click image to enlarge PreviousNext Lot closed - Sold Price (Including Buyer`s Premium):$10,200 Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000 Description Description: Description Update 03/18/2020: Item is Antique serial #8499, .577 BPE 2 3/4", 28" barrels with bright excellent bores. This is an extremely handsome and finely made London double express rifle featuring a Jones underlever on a hammerless boxlock action. The frame, lever and tangs are engraved in about 80% coverage with lovely tight English scroll and border work. Each side of the frame is engraved "J.W. Newton & Co." and the hand matted top rib of the barrel shows an open panel which is engraved "J.W. Newton & Co. London". The tops of the barrels are engraved with loading data "577 EXPRESS 2 3/4 IN SOLID CASE" on left barrel and "160GRS No. 6 POWDER 520 GRS BULLET" and the word safe is inlaid in gold on the top tang. The serial number is only found on the lower rib of barrels beneath the forend. The watertable show London view proofs and the bar has two recesses neatly milled, presumably to lighten the action. The stock shows lovely recessed checkered panels on the cheeks with beautifully formed dropper points and the forend has a forward mounted lever release which is fully engraved. The condition of the rifle is wonderful with the barrels retaining perhaps 90% thinning original blue finish overall with all markings remaining sharp and just one blemish on top and a couple small dings on the edge of the matted rib. The action shows about 75% faded original color case-hardened finish which still shows contrast on the sides with the front of the belly being silvery. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of beautifully figured English walnut which shows rich color. The checkering on the full tang capped pistolgrip remains strong and clean as it does on the forend. The forend shows a wonderful panel of finer checkering within a tasteful thin border at the base near action. The stocks retain lots of original finish with just normal light handling marks. The rifle wears a solid rubber pad which has hardened over time and has some chipping at toe and heel. The rifle is sighted with a beaded blade removable front and single standing and four folding leaf express rear sight graduated from 100 to 500 yards. All five leaves show full coverage very fine scroll engraving. The rifle comes in its original brass trimmed leather trunk style case. The lid of the case bears a royal crest with lettering in Farsi along with three painted initials and "577 EXPRESS" painted in black with red drop shadow, the initials are in the same color pattern. The case includes a full complement of accessories including three rosewood handled turnscrews, finely crafted bullet mould with hollow tip insert, a brass Hawksley crimper, patch cutter, powder measure, a pewter oiler and what appears to be a bullet seater. The case is in very good to excellent condition with embossed leather covering fully intact and green baize lined interior is excellent. We have found very little about J.W. Newton & Co. and when they were active. The rifle weighs just a little over 10 lbs. and points nicely with a 14 1/4" length of pull. Further research will likely identify the crest which is likely an Indian Maharajah. This is a very fine, top quality rifle in a wonderful state of preservation and cased with its accessories. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale (excluding Class III) when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. If an FFL dealer is sending an “agent” to pick up items, that person must be a bona fide, paid employee of the company with a W4 on file. Outside contractors cannot be used as pickup agents. A SIGNED LETTER FROM THE FFL STATING THIS FACT MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF PICK UP. The FFL Dealer will in turn be notified that a transfer was made to you as their agent. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm, on day of sale, provided the proper paperwork is completed and the transfer has been approved either through the N.H. State Police or the FBI NICS System, whichever is appropriate based upon the type of firearm(s) purchased. Non-resident individuals from states without waiting periods may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check. If you reside in a state with a waiting period, your items will need to be shipped to a dealer in your state. No modern handguns will be delivered to non-resident individuals. All modern handguns purchased by non-resident individuals will need to be delivered to or shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state.
