An interesting gun, it appears very Czech in the manner of its construction and architecture, especially when the Czech arms emulate Germanic arms of the same era. The barrels are actually marked on the underside ''Merley London'', Stockel attributing this to Sebastien Merley of St. Etienne, the left tube actually with an engraved Belgian proof mark. The barrels are now primarily a dull gray patina and have remnants of an impressed gold touch mark near the breeches, it unfortunately cannot be deciphered. The breeches are rather interesting in that they have large musket-style nipples which are open along their bottom edges, with a combustion chamber in-which appears to be another small nipple or cone. Rather than a pill lock or something similar this actually appears to be some manner of improved ignition device that uses a musket cap. It is likely that these barrels started life as being destined for a flintlock as the left and right tubes show plugged holes done prior to their finishing, just ahead of the current installed breeches. The locks and hammers show loose open flowing scroll, with beveled edges and very heavy hammer noses, showing perhaps 40% color case-hardening. The long tang as well is similar and very heavy in construction. The ramrod tailpipe and triggerplate front extension are very large and somewhat clumsy also. They show the same loose open flowing scroll and retain some strong color case-hardening. The European walnut stock rates very good with some very lovely grain figure, much original varnish and the expected light dings, flaking and handling marks that come from a field-used arm. There is a very large left side flared European-style cheekpiece with checkered panels at the wrist and forestock. There is a generous triggerguard as well of carved walnut with a very large carved scroll swirl at its rear. The right lock functions properly, the left lock does not hold on full cock, its half-cock notch is functional. The arm is equipped with rather large 1 1/2'' sling swivel loops. There is an antique horn-tip ramrod included. An interesting European double percussion fowler with a strange ignition system.
