The barrels are a very nice contrasting brown and gray damascus twist patterns their full-length. They are maker marked atop the rib ''William Greener Maker Rifle Hill Works Birmingham''. The breeches show some nice original color case-hardening with some very nice scroll on the rib extension between, each with an engraved platinum blowout plug. The long upper tang, lockplates and hammers all show exquisite tight flowing English scroll, the hammer noses v-cut with nice upward curving cap deflector swirls at their noses. Each lockplate has a raised island upon-which the hammer pivots, continuing very neatly onto the stock itself, each plate maker marked ''W Greener''. There is an engraved ramrod tailpipe, fancy engraved triggerplate front extension and some nice engraving on the bow of the guard. The English walnut stock rates very fine showing some lovely grain figure and coarse checkering at both the wrist and forestock, the forestock pattern showing a number of small dings and dents which have compressed the points. The bottom of each lock is lightly rebated and rounded, this motif continuing on the stock flat which curls slightly around the bottom of the forestock area. The locks are crisp, mechanically functional, and in time and there is a barrel bolster plate mounted at the bottom of the tang, the underside of the hooked breech is neatly milled to match it precisely. The arm comes in what is no doubt its original mahogany presentation case with the former owners name engraved on the circular plaque on the lid ''Emery E. Norton/N.O.''. The interior features a William Greener makers label and we find a nice leather covered Dickson fireproof patent top adjustable charger flask which rates excellent with hallmarked silver top, there is a matching shot flask hallmarked as well. There are a number of cleaning accessories, spare nipples, a small Sykes priming flask, ebony handled nickel silver nipple cleaner and thread chaser. Mainspring vice, patch cutter and a few japanned tins of caps along with a nipple wrench-picked combination tool as well. Emery Ebenezer Norton, served in the Union Army during the Civil War, postwar he opened a law firm in New Orleans before moving to Stroudsburg, PA in 1867. Evidently he was locally ''famous'' for embellishing the story of his Civil War service, according to him taking part in many exciting and perilous battles. In reality he enlisted in February 1863 as a captain in the U.S. Volunteers Commissary Department, a position he resigned in January 1864. He was actually a very successful attorney, being admitted as a member of the State of New York Supreme Court pre-war. He is buried in Stroudsburg Cemetery and built himself a huge mausoleum for all to remember him by, with a life-sized copper bust of ''Col. Norton'', his full beard spreading halfway down his chest, on the interior. Esq. Norton notwithstanding, this is a very lovely shotgun in a very fine state of condition and would likely provide years of service while still retaining solid investment potential. Online payment will now be available for buyers directly through the online invoicing process. • Credit card purchases are limited to $50,000.00 per customer, per auction. Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. reserves the right to demand cash or hold merchandise until funds are collected in full. There will be a $35.00 charge for all returned checks. • A 17.5% Buyer’s Premium will be added to all purchases regardless of price with a 2.5% discount when paying with check or cash . This premium is to be paid as part of the purchase price. • Customers without prior credit approval who intend on making purchases in excess of $10,000 must provide credit information such as a bank letter of credit prior to bidding. GUIDELINES FOR FIREARM PURCHASES • All Federal, State and Local firearms laws will be observed. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm on day of sale providing the proper paperwork is filled out and the transfer has been approved either through the NH State Police or the FBI NICS System. While most NICS and State approvals are immediate, approvals could take up to 3 days. Most non-residents may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check; modern handguns will need to be shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale. Bidders should be familiar with their local and state laws as Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be responsible for any parties purchasing items which may not be possessed in, or shipped, to their state of residence. CLASS III WEAPONS • Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. is a licensed Class III S.O.T. and handles transfers of Machineguns, Suppressors, A.O.W.’s and short barreled rifles and shotguns in-house. Class III invoices are expected to be paid upon receipt, no transfer paperwork will be executed until the invoice is paid. Know that class III transfers take a good deal of time for Federal approval and we are at their mercy. Firearms are marked as follows: ANTIQUE - no paperwork required C&R - for firearms that fall under the ATF Curio & Relics licensing and if purchased by a person with a “C&R License” no paperwork is required. NOTE: Items that meet the age requirements but have been altered from their original configuration may NOT be delivered on a C&R License. Firearms that are not marked with one of these notations are considered to be “MODERN” and all proper paperwork is required unless you are an FFL Dealer. ABSENTEE/TELEPHONE/ON-LINE BIDDING • As a service to our buyers, Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will accept absentee bids from bidders who cannot attend the sale. Bidders without prior credit approval are required to submit a 20% deposit prior to bids being accepted (credit cards may be used for absentee deposits). Absentee bids will be bid in a competitive manner and an absentee bidder needs only to outbid another buyer i.e. bidding will not be opened at the maximum bid unless that is the next competitive bid. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges. Properly registered Amoskeag On-line bidders may use this service free of additional charges as an alternative to telephone or absentee bidding, at their election.
