Bore diameters are .731" right and .730 left with minimum wall thicknesses of .023" right and over .030" left. Most of the right tube is above .030'', there is just one small area ,023" which is about 20" from breech. This is an extremely handsome double gun. Bar-in-wood guns are interesting to begin with but this one has fabulous stepped locks with the curved edge following the contour and travel of the hammers. The hammers have a dramatic rearward curve, indeed much like the Remington 1889 shotguns, but being British, these hammers are more refined and graceful. The action and locks show fine tight English scroll engraving in about 90% coverage with each lock being engraved "ARMY & NAVY C.S.L.". The barrels show fine English scroll at the breech and on doll's head rib extension with the top rib engraved "ARMY & NAVY C.S.L. LONDON.". The barrels retain 95% London quality re-blacked finish with all markings and proofs remaining clear and legible. The action and rebounding locks show about 70% original color case-hardened finish with colors quite vivid on left lock and more faded and darkening on the right side with a few patches of light oxidation staining. All engraving remains crisp and the locks function very crisply. The checkered straight grip buttstock and forend are of figured walnut and rate excellent probably being cleaned with added finish. The checkering is flat top cut and remains excellent and the gun has a 14" length of pull over a solid red rubber pad that is later and shows drops of 1 5/8" and 2 1/2". A previous owner contacted the University of Glasgow Archives seeking information as to who actually made this gun, as Army & Navy CSL was a retailer. That information was not available however the records show that this gun was originally sold to Colonel Floyd-Jones in 1890. Delancey Floyd-Jones was born in South Oyster Bay, NY in 1826 and died in New York City in 1902. He was descended from Major Thomas Jones (1665-1713) for whom Jones Beach, NY is named. He graduated 45th in the West Point class of 1846. He had a long military career beginning during the Mexican War where he participated in the Seige of Veracruz, the Battle of Molino Del Ray and the battle for Mexico City. He was promoted to Major in 1861 and was active throughout the entire Civil War finishing the war as a brevetted Brigadier General. He went on to serve in a variety of administrative posts and finally retired in March of 1879. He would later travel the world and probably purchased this shotgun at Army & Navy in London. The Floyd-Jones family history is interesting and Delancey was related by blood or through marriage to two signers of the Declaration of Independence, writer James Fennimore Cooper, Daniel Webster, New York Governor DeWitt Clinton, Edith Wharton and Alexander Hamilton. Clearly this was a very well-to-do, well-connected and powerful family. The gun comes in a leather trimmed canvas trunk style case with Army & Navy "Gun Department" label on interior lid. The lid is embossed with initials "F.C.-." The last initial looks like it is a "P" but old period railway shipping labels cover the lower half of the letter. A very handsome and fine bar-in-wood double gun belonging to this prominent New York blue blood. There will be a $35.00 charge for all returned checks. • A 17.5% Buyer’s Premium will be added to all purchases regardless of price with a 2.5% discount when paying with check or cash . GUIDELINES FOR FIREARM PURCHASES • All Federal, State and Local firearms laws will be observed. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm on day of sale providing the proper paperwork is filled out and the transfer has been approved either through the NH State Police or the FBI NICS System. While most NICS and State approvals are immediate, approvals could take up to 3 days. Most non-residents may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check; modern handguns will need to be shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale. Bidders should be familiar with their local and state laws as Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be responsible for any parties purchasing items which may not be possessed in, or shipped, to their state of residence. CLASS III WEAPONS • Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. is a licensed Class III S.O.T. and handles transfers of Machineguns, Suppressors, A.O.W.’s and short barreled rifles and shotguns in-house. Class III invoices are expected to be paid upon receipt, no transfer paperwork will be executed until the invoice is paid. Know that class III transfers take a good deal of time for Federal approval and we are at their mercy. Firearms are marked as follows: ANTIQUE - no paperwork required C&R - for firearms that fall under the ATF Curio & Relics licensing and if purchased by a person with a “C&R License” no paperwork is required. NOTE: Items that meet the age requirements but have been altered from their original configuration may NOT be delivered on a C&R License. Firearms that are not marked with one of these notations are considered to be “MODERN” and all proper paperwork is required unless you are an FFL Dealer. ABSENTEE/TELEPHONE/ON-LINE BIDDING • As a service to our buyers, Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will accept absentee bids from bidders who cannot attend the sale. Bidders without prior credit approval are required to submit a 20% deposit prior to bids being accepted (credit cards may be used for absentee deposits). Absentee bids will be bid in a competitive manner and an absentee bidder needs only to outbid another buyer i.e. bidding will not be opened at the maximum bid unless that is the next competitive bid.
