This is a lovely honest Henry with matching serial numbers found on the barrel, lower tang, buttstock inlet, interior toe of buttplate, both buttplate screws and upper tang screws. Additionally, the buttstock and buttplate are matching by another assembly number "12" stamped on the right side lower tang of the frame and Oliver Winchester's "W" inspector stamp is found on the interior left side lower tang. The lower tang screw is number "2000" and the assembly number of the barrel collar "566" is mismatched from the barrel "883" but has undoubtedly been with this gun since the period of use as the patina matches perfectly. The barrel, hammer and lever have toned to a very attractive deep plum-brown patina showing a few old handling marks scattered about. The standard two-line barrel patent date and address shows some mild softening of the edges but remain completely intact and legible. The frame and rounded heel buttplate have taken on a wonderful deep rich ocher patina showing a few tiny dings around the screws and ejection port and an old peen mark on the edge of the right sideplate. The frame is period-embellished with a patriotic star motif, they have been formed using a small triangular punch with two found on either side of the frame and one on the bottom of the cartridge lifter, additionally there is a series of small notches around the edges of the lifter. The smooth walnut buttstock remains in very good plus condition with strong remnants of antique varnish that is slightly crazing throughout, a very thin small hairline crack at the upper tang and scattered light dings. There is a series of 14 neatly carved stars along the back edge adjacent to the buttplate and a small geometric motif at the heel. The sling swivel hardware has been removed and the frame has the extra factory dovetail for relocating the rear sight. The rear sight is the earliest 1000 yard variation, the front is a brass blade and the action seems to function well mechanically. A four-piece hickory cleaning rod is present, the segments showing some light dings and wear. The jag segment appears to be of more modern construction but the remaining segments appear correct. While this example does not bear any government inspector markings it is listed by serial number in the U.S. Martial Arms Collector magazine issue 78 as being issued to Company H, 3rd Regiment Veterans Volunteer Infantry on May 17, 1865. A copy of the magazine is included and the arm is also listed as such in The Historic Henry Rifle by Sword. A copy of the original ordnance records page for Company H is also included indicating this rifle was issued to Jacob Henry and then subsequently crossed out and a new number "9207" written over. It seems likely Henry was initially issued this rifle with 9207 being reissued to him at a later date. The U.S. Veteran Volunteers regiments were formed late in the war in 1865 as elite units naturally composed of experienced veterans but the war ended before they saw action. Research indicates Jacob Henry originally served with the 48th New York Infantry and enlisted at 34 years of age on August 22, 1861 in Brooklyn and eventually served as a wagoner. The 48th saw extensive action participating in the assault on Fort Wagner, Battle of Olustee, Drewry's Bluffs, Cold Harbor and the Assault on Petersburg to name a few. The regiment suffered a total of 369 casualties. This desirable Henry would make an exceptional addition to any fine collection of American arms. There will be a $35.00 charge for all returned checks. • A 17.5% Buyer’s Premium will be added to all purchases regardless of price with a 2.5% discount when paying with check or cash . This premium is to be paid as part of the purchase price. • Customers without prior credit approval who intend on making purchases in excess of $10,000 must provide credit information such as a bank letter of credit prior to bidding. GUIDELINES FOR FIREARM PURCHASES • All Federal, State and Local firearms laws will be observed. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm on day of sale providing the proper paperwork is filled out and the transfer has been approved either through the NH State Police or the FBI NICS System. While most NICS and State approvals are immediate, approvals could take up to 3 days. Most non-residents may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check; modern handguns will need to be shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale. Bidders should be familiar with their local and state laws as Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be responsible for any parties purchasing items which may not be possessed in, or shipped, to their state of residence. CLASS III WEAPONS • Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. is a licensed Class III S.O.T. and handles transfers of Machineguns, Suppressors, A.O.W.’s and short barreled rifles and shotguns in-house. Class III invoices are expected to be paid upon receipt, no transfer paperwork will be executed until the invoice is paid. Know that class III transfers take a good deal of time for Federal approval and we are at their mercy. Firearms are marked as follows: ANTIQUE - no paperwork required C&R - for firearms that fall under the ATF Curio & Relics licensing and if purchased by a person with a “C&R License” no paperwork is required. NOTE: Items that meet the age requirements but have been altered from their original configuration may NOT be delivered on a C&R License. Firearms that are not marked with one of these notations are considered to be “MODERN” and all proper paperwork is required unless you are an FFL Dealer. ABSENTEE/TELEPHONE/ON-LINE BIDDING • As a service to our buyers, Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will accept absentee bids from bidders who cannot attend the sale. Bidders without prior credit approval are required to submit a 20% deposit prior to bids being accepted (credit cards may be used for absentee deposits). Absentee bids will be bid in a competitive manner and an absentee bidder needs only to outbid another buyer i.e. bidding will not be opened at the maximum bid unless that is the next competitive bid.
