Catalog Auction info Auction #124 - Two-Day Sale, November 23 & 24 (#124) 11/23/2019 9:00 AM EST Closed Starts Ending 11/23/2019 9:00 AM EST Auction Info Lot #70 Magnificent Cased Pair of Exhibition Quality Percussion Pistols by St. Heym of Suhl Click image to enlarge PreviousNext Lot closed - unsold Estimate: $10,000 - $20,000 Description Description: .38 caliber, 10" octagon barrels with bright excellent bores. These pistols show their maker marks stamped neatly into the barrel channels of the stocks "ST. HEYM / SUHL", one barrel is marked 'ST.H." with a sunken "S" Suhl touchmark. The guns are numbered "1" & "2" in gold on tangs, the number "2" gun shows the barrel marking, both stocks are marked. Both top flats of the barrels show a British "(crown) / V" proof indicating they were sold in England at some point. The metal decoration is unusual with the engraved scroll work all being of raised silver scroll against the case color of the lock and the bright blue of the barrel. It is all very tasteful with light scrolls on the locks along with a raised border and with lovely silver scroll on hammers. The barrels show extensive raised silver decoration at breech with silver and gold bands, fancy scroll and arrows pointing toward muzzle on the top three surfaces at breech. The center sections of barrel show long silver panels which are not engraved but are bordered in more lovely silver scroll. The muzzles are double silver banded and there are also arrows on the top flat facing the front sight just back from the muzzles. While the metalwork is tasteful and finely executed, the carving on the ebony stocks is truly breathtaking especially when one considers the hardness and density of ebony. They are carved in full coverage with relief floral scroll against a beautifully stippled background. The butt is scalloped and within the four recessed portions of each butt are carved tassels hanging from the scroll above; the detail is remarkable. The butt caps and triggerguards are color case-hardened with the same wonderful embellishments as the other metal surfaces. The guns are fitted with their original adjustable single set triggers which function properly and the locks are very crisp. The condition is wonderful as well with the barrels retaining at least 95% deep rich original blue finish. The locks and furniture all retain 95% of their original color case hardened finish which has mellowed over time and have a lovely appearance. The stocks are excellent with crisp carving and edges, there is one small chip at the front of the raised lock panel on gun No. 1. The guns are sighted with a fine blade front in narrow dovetail and elevation adjustable rear sight in tang. The guns come in a beautiful rosewood veneered case which is French fitted and lined in green baize. The accessories include a bullet mould, powder measure, powder flask, pewter oiler, an ebony handled turnscrew with three interchangeable inserts, a wad cutter, two turned ebony canisters for caps and patches, an ivory tipped ebony ramrod which doubles as a mallet and an ebony cleaning rod with brass jag. Also included in one of the compartments is a pair of replacement nipples and a pair of additional front sights. The condition of the case is very fine inside and the outside shows some cracks in the veneer, they seem sound. A highly unusual and magnificently embellished pair of German percussion pistols. A true testament to the gunmaker's art.
