The barrels are a contrasting gray and two-tone brown damascus twist pattern their full length, toning and drifting a bit in the area above the forend, with some scattered light oxidation staining and perhaps the oddly scattered pinprick pit here or there, most prominent along the left side of the tubes. An interesting set of barrels, they are stepped about 8 1/2” from the breeches, perhaps there were a second set of barrels, the first set being 12 ga. tubes, these smaller 16 ga. tubes fitted to the same stock being interchangeable. Breeches shows some strong trace color case-hardening adjacent to the rib and feature platinum blowout plugs with a bit of light engraving on the rib extension, they are London proved on the underside and marked “16”. Barrels are marked “Joseph Manton & Son” with the Holles St., Cavendish Square address. The tang is a smoky gray case-hardened patina with some strong remnant colors, each lockplate showing remnants of colors in the areas adjacent to the hammer. Lockplates and hammers show light sprays of loose open scroll of excellent quality on their flats, the plates with banknote filigree bordering and each marked “Joseph Manton & Son”. The tailpipe is neatly engraved in a pineapple finial as-is the front extension of the triggerplate, the bow of the guard with the same nice open scroll. These exhibiting a bit of fading original blue but primarily a pewter patina. The straight grip English walnut stock rates very good with the expected minor dings and handling marks from the years with a few light dents along the sharp edge of the forend. The checkering is flat-topped and there is a rectangular silver monogram plate atop the wrist which is un-engraved. The locks function well mechanically, the left lock slightly ahead of the right. The arm comes cased in a mahogany presentation case with green baize lined interior, with Rev. E.C. Alston’s property label on the interior. Inside we find a somewhat tired hanging game shot flask, a French powder flask with adjustable spout, fixed common top and hunter panel scenes; one of the hangers is missing and the seams are beginning to separate. There is a turnscrew and some cleaning accessories and a mahogany wiping rod as well as a tin of Eley caps. Rev. Edward Constable Alston, born in 1895, was “...the last of the great sporting Parsons” and was a knowledgeable expert on late 18th and 19th century sporting arms, in addition to his angling records. It is highly likely this gun was once his property. The case itself rates very good with the expected light dings and handling marks that come from the years. There will be a $35.00 charge for all returned checks. • A 17.5% Buyer’s Premium will be added to all purchases regardless of price with a 2.5% discount when paying with check or cash . GUIDELINES FOR FIREARM PURCHASES • All Federal, State and Local firearms laws will be observed. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm on day of sale providing the proper paperwork is filled out and the transfer has been approved either through the NH State Police or the FBI NICS System. While most NICS and State approvals are immediate, approvals could take up to 3 days. Most non-residents may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check; modern handguns will need to be shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer’s home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale. Bidders should be familiar with their local and state laws as Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be responsible for any parties purchasing items which may not be possessed in, or shipped, to their state of residence. CLASS III WEAPONS • Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. is a licensed Class III S.O.T. and handles transfers of Machineguns, Suppressors, A.O.W.’s and short barreled rifles and shotguns in-house. Class III invoices are expected to be paid upon receipt, no transfer paperwork will be executed until the invoice is paid. Know that class III transfers take a good deal of time for Federal approval and we are at their mercy. Firearms are marked as follows: ANTIQUE - no paperwork required C&R - for firearms that fall under the ATF Curio & Relics licensing and if purchased by a person with a “C&R License” no paperwork is required. NOTE: Items that meet the age requirements but have been altered from their original configuration may NOT be delivered on a C&R License. Firearms that are not marked with one of these notations are considered to be “MODERN” and all proper paperwork is required unless you are an FFL Dealer. ABSENTEE/TELEPHONE/ON-LINE BIDDING • As a service to our buyers, Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will accept absentee bids from bidders who cannot attend the sale. Bidders without prior credit approval are required to submit a 20% deposit prior to bids being accepted (credit cards may be used for absentee deposits). Absentee bids will be bid in a competitive manner and an absentee bidder needs only to outbid another buyer i.e. bidding will not be opened at the maximum bid unless that is the next competitive bid.
