This is an interesting rifle with a conversion similar to the British Snider with a pivoting cylindrical breech block equipped with the nipple and splash guard secured via a spring-loaded detent at the breech face. Strangely, the flash hole has either been plugged or was never drilled entirely through and there is a thin 1/2" cut at the right edge of the block looking into the chamber, obviously this would not be conducive to firing. Perhaps this rifle was assembled as a proof of concept rather than a functioning conversion. The barrel is quite nice retaining most of its armory polish with just some scattered light scratches and some minor freckling. The remaining metal surfaces are more of a silvery gray patina showing some spots of cleaned light pitting and the rear barrel band showing a brazed repair. There is a "P / (Eagle Head)" proof at the breech, the tang is dated 1854 corresponding with the lockplate date and the lockplate markings are also crisp with nice "(Federal Eagle) / US" and "US" on the buttplate tang. The smooth straight grip walnut stock remains in very good plus condition retaining strong arsenal oil finish and showing a professional repair on the left stock flat, a small crack behind the lock, some scattered light dings and handling marks. There is a faint cartouche on the left flat, no ramrod is present and the lock will require mechanical attention as it only holds at half cock. An interesting example for the U.S. martial collector.
