Col., Charles R. Mudge, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry, Killed At Gettysburg Click image to enlarge PreviousNextSimilar Items Estimate: $6,000 - $8,000 Starting: $4,250 Description Description: -This sword measures 36" overall with a 30 1/4" slightly curved, single-edged blade having wide and narrow fullers and 2/3 length etched panels. The blade has a mottled bright patina with areas of dark freckling at the tip and a dark area on the obverse forte. The reverse forte has been etched in rather delicate by clear script, likely post-war, "1861/Captain Charles Reddington Mudge/Second Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry/Front Royal, Va., Winchester, Va., Antietam, Md.". The brass hilt has an overall mustard-brown patina with spots of ruddy tarnish on the pommel and light wear on the shagreen grip with intact braided wire wrap. The leather scabbard is heavily crazed but intact while the brass furniture has a patina that matches that of the hilt. The chape has numerous small dents and is engraved on the reverse with the same text as on the blade, this engraving being quite a bit finer in execution and in the style we would expect to see from the Civil War time period. A pair of heavy brass hanger clips are also affixed. Charles Reddington Mudge was a 21-year-old Harvard graduate when he enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant on May 25, 1861, and was commissioned into Co. F, 2nd Mass. Infantry. Mudge was promoted to Captain about two months later, to Major in November of 1862, and again to Lt. Colonel and command of the regiment in June of 1863. Mudge suffered wounds at Winchester and Chancellorsville but, on July 3, 1863, while leading an unsupported charge on strong Confederate positions at the base of Culp's Hill (Spangler's Spring), he was hit in the throat and killed instantly. Ironically, according to several sources, upon receiving the order to attack Mudge is quoted as having said, "Well, it is murder, but it's the order.". A marker commemorating the attack was erected on the approximate spot where Mudge was killed. This is a fine identified sword, probably sent home when Mudge was promoted to the regimental staff, and would make an excellent addition to a fine Civil War or American sword collection.
