  • Description
    Description:

17 bore (.65 cal), 9 1/4” octagon barrels with mostly bright very good bores showing scattered light oxidation. These handsome pistols bear London silver hallmarks for 1804 and have all of the refined features we would expect to see on a set of early 19th century flintlock arms including patent breeches, adjustable set triggers and compact locks with sliding safeties, waterproof pans and bridled roller frizzens. The barrels retain much of their attractive contrasting plum-brown and gray subtle twist patterns showing a little bit of old surface oxidation and pinprick pits scattered about. The breech plugs retain nice vibrant case-hardened colors and show nice gold line inlays, impressed maker’s touch mark and gold vent liners. The lockplate of one pistols is mostly a smoky gray case-hardened patina showing a little mild surface oxidation, small chip at the rear of the sliding safety and brilliant fire blue along the frizzen spring. The other lockplate is similar retaining stronger wisps of case-hardened colors, particularly vibrant along the cock, which appears to be a very old replacement as its shape is slightly different. The silver fittings include the single ramrod thimbles, tailpipes, wide spur triggerguard with fine pineapple finials, small teardrop buttcaps, oval wedge escutcheons, monogram plates atop wrist, single lock screw escutcheons and ramrod tips. All of these display a very fine dark tarnish with just some scattered light handling marks and a little old verdigris. The finely checkered walnut stocks rate near excellent with strong original finish, scattered light dings and handling marks. One pistol shows a thin 2” repaired crack along the right edge nose and the checkering with mullered borders remains quite strong throughout. Fit is excellent and both silver-tipped ramrods have iron worm ends. The pistols are sighted with deep u-notch rear sights and fine silver blade front sights, the lock of one pistol does not hold at full cock and the other is functional though its set trigger is not setting correctly. The pistols include their original mahogany case in fine condition showing scattered light dings, a few small cracks and honest wear to the green baize lining. The original lid label with 252 Oxford Street address is completely intact showing some mild staining and a name written in brown ink, likely the original owner “James Mahon” over “Saint Vincent”. The case has two lidded compartments and contains an 18 bore round ball mould, Dixon multi-compartment flask with pseudo hallmarks, and a two-piece cleaning rod with assorted attachments. Joseph Gulley established his business at 252 Oxford St. in 1799 and moved to 254 Oxford St. circa 1805, working there until 1833. These pistols with desirable silver mountings are a fine example of his work. (13D11730-1149) {ANTIQUE} [Peter DeRose Collection] (5000/7000)
