Behr Click image to enlarge PreviousNextSimilar Items Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000 Starting: $3,500 Description Description: .80 cal, 57 3/4” octagon barrel with swamped muzzle with a bright near excellent bore showing a few small areas of old oxidation. This huge flintlock remains in original flint and fine condition, the metal surfaces mostly a mix of pewter gunmetal and mild gray-brown patina with a bit of old surface oxidation and staining scattered about. The lockplate is banana-shaped with pronounced beveled edges and the expected simple hardware including robust swan neck cock, faceted pan, unbridled frizzen and frizzen spring with lightly chiseled extension. The point at the rear of the plate is blunted, apparently broken off long ago, but this is unobtrusive and the center of the plate bears fine maker marking “I.I.BEHR”. The left barrel flat shows a small assembly mark, there are two deeply impressed touch marks on the lower right barrel flat beneath the lockplate and the lockplate and its associated parts all show a single hash line assembly mark. Iron hardware is in typical form featuring triple faceted ramrod thimbles and tailpipe, triggerguard with simple wide decorative extensions, curlicue trigger, heavy buttplate with long pointed heel, a comparatively dainty flat curving sideplate and a large oval escutcheon atop wrist. The smooth walnut stock rates very fine showing the expected scattered dings and mild abrasions, small crack and chip ahead of lockplate and slight gaps at some of the hardware. There is a peculiar straight cut in the stock between the tailpipe and rear thimble, whoever did this did not even bother to remove the ramrod, which is also cut in the same area. This certainly appears to have been done long ago. The stock maintains a nice honest appearance with very fine edges and raised carving around the hardware including pronounced drop points. There is a small assembly stamp on the right side of the wrist which is matching the mark on the left flat of the barrel along with a white painted “24” on the right side of the buttstock. The ramrod is iron-tipped and the arm is sighted with a large fixed u-notch rear sight and iron blade front. The lock is robust and seems to function normally and overall length is 75 3/4”. Johann Jakob Behr is invariably listed working in Wurzburg, Liege, Maastricht and other locations in Europe between 1700-1740. Behr is also listed in “Gunsmiths of Maryland” by Hartzler and Whisker as a supplier to the Maryland Committee of Safety during the Revolutionary War. They list Behr as a Maryland maker from Frederick County as quite a few Maryland-branded arms by Behr are known. But it seems more likely that the Committee procured a group of arms from Europe. While this example is not specifically branded by Maryland, it is pictured on page 9 of “Gunsmiths of Maryland” by Hartzler and Whisker and an extremely similar example is pictured on page 194 of “Battle Weapons of the American Revolution” by Neumann. In any event, arms both by Behr and of this type were used in the Revolutionary War and this is a very impressive piece for the antique arms collector.
