This is the product of Joseph Manton and Son who were in business under this name from 1834-1838. The tops of the breeches show gold filled touchmarks which read "JOSEPH / MANTON / PATENT". The locks feature waterproof pans and Manton's distinctive fancy cocks. The squareback lockplates are marked "MANTON & SON" and show tasteful border engraving with simple gamescenes to rear of cocks. This gun likely began life as a fine sporting fowler which was period converted to coach gun by the neat shortening of the barrels making it much more nimble within the confines of a coach. The serial number is only found on the bottom of the barrels. The steel triggerguard and buttplate are tastefully engraved, most of this engraving is softened from the years. The barrel proofs and numbers beneath the stock are also soft from being cleaned. The locks show perhaps the sharpest engraving. The barrels are an even gray patina with some scattered light pitting, the locks are similar albeit a bit darker and more smooth with the iron furniture bearing a similar colored patina. The stock is checkered at the wrist with plain rectangular silver monogram plate. The stock rates very good with perhaps some added light finish over the years ad a repaired crack in the forend on the right side behind the wedge. This is an interesting and handy little flintlock double gun by one of the world's most respected family of gunmakers.
