  • Description
    Description:

.79 caliber, 46" barrel with an oxidized bore. The top of the barrel is marked "Ks OWN REGt" which was also known as the 4th Regiment of Foot. The lock is marked at rear vertically "VERNON / 1761" with mostly legible royal cipher ahead of cock. The barrel shows a proof or barrel makers mark which appears to be "* / IW" or "IV". The lock surfaces all bear a rich brown patina with scattered light pitting and with markings generally clear and legible. The pan and touchhole look very much undisturbed with the expected oxidation, pitting and light erosion. An internal inspection with a bore scope shows undisturbed oxidation throughout the breech area. The barrel is an even brown patina with very fine surface abrasions from being lightly cleaned long ago. Markings on barrel remain fully legible with light wear. The stock has its proper and original brass mountings which all show an older light cleaning leaving a light patina overall. The wrist plate is marked with what appears to be remnants of a "E" over "20". The stock shows softened edges with an old added dark finish. The raised panel around the barrel tang remains well defined as is the swell at tailpipe but the edges around the sideplate and lock are soft. The brass furniture including the buttplate, triggerguard and wrist plate all fit very nicely. A correct iron ramrod with button head is present. Overall this musket appears quite honest and original to the period. Includes a p0roper socket bayonet by Hadley that rates fine bearing a similar patina as the gun and shows softened but legible markings. The 4th Regiment of foot arrived in Boston in 1774 and remained in North America until departing in 1778 for the West Indies. They were involved in the opening skirmishes and battles of the American Revolution and were present throughout the entirety of the Siege of Boston. They were actively involved at the battle of Lexington and Concord taking casualties on Concord Bridge. Their Light Company fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Upon their retreat from Boston in March of 1776, the British forces sailed to Halifax Nova Scotia to regroup. They left Nova Scotia in June of 1776 and sailed to Staten Island where they were involved in battles at Staten Island and Long Island. They were heavily involved in the New York campaign and finished their North American campaign in Philadelphia where they departed in 1778 for St. Lucia the West Indies. The 4th Regiment of Foot is documented to have been involved in the first actions of the Revolutionary War and were very active throughout their four plus years here. Muskets marked for the King's Own Regiment are extremely rare with only a handful being known to exist. There is an example in the Colonial Williamsburg collection, another fine American Stocked example was part of a 1976 American Society of Arms Collectors Bulletin article by Bill Guthman. In 2018 another example was part of the Bill Ahearn Collection sold at Skinner's, it was originally discovered by Norm Flayderman in the 1970's, was restored and sold by Flayderman in 1978. This musket was acquired by Dick Littlefield in Vermont, was shown at a American Society meeting and has never before been offered for public sale. A truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a British Revolutionary War musket that was there when the fight for American Independence began. (1F12444-78) {ANTIQUE} [Richard & Elizabeth Littlefield Collection] (30,000/50,000)
