As part of the continued endeavor to provide a match rifle superior to those fielded by competing nations, the United States Marine Corps were crafted eleven specially modified Model 1903 receivers by Springfield Armory, forged without machining for a magazine well to increase rigidity. A specialized triggerguard without machining for floorplate or magazine box with shortened bronze palm rest bracket was paired with the receiver, and were joined in a walnut stock without inletting for the magazine box, further increasing rigidity and improving bedding of the action, and parts from previous International Match rifles were used to complete the rifle. The barreled action retains about 95% original blue with light wear on high edges and contact points, the greater concentration on the receiver, and some scattered light handling marks. The special triggerguard retains about 98% original blue with some light handling marks and hints of tool marks around the screw holes, the Swiss-type adjustable front sling swivel shows a bit more wear with some mild flaking to brown, and the bolt body is polished bright with the shroud retaining strong smoky oil-quenched case-hardened patina, and the bolt handle has been neatly modified to be more down and rearward swept. The barrel band is correctly fabricated from the Model 1917 band, an “E” for Eddystone mark still visible, and has toned to gray along the left side. The smooth pistolgrip walnut stock with dual recoil screws and no grasping grooves is in near excellent condition with a few scattered light dings and handling marks and a spot relieved beneath the bolt handle with a light 3/4” sliver above it at the woodline, the forend neatly inlet for the adjustable front sling swivel, a period-added threaded ferrule in the stock tip with the edge of the stock tip lightly relieved, and is fit with an adjustable grooved aluminum buttplate. The cork palm rest is intact with some light dings and handling marks, and shows some mild wear around the circumference. The receiver markings remain crisp but partially concealed beneath the mounted target block, the underside showing the proper “NS-42” die number, and the underside of the barrel is star gauge numbered “E-53”. The rifle is sighted with the Winchester globe-style front sight with globe-style insert and Lyman 48 receiver sight, curiously is fit with a lone target block on the receiver with no matching pair on the barrel (nor evidence of filled holes), and is fit with a double set trigger numbered “1274544”. The rifle appears to function well mechanically, falls within the correct 1341950-1341970 serial number range, and Springfield Research Services lists the rifle as an International Match, “solid bottom”, with a 30” barrel having been sent to Quantico, inspected at Springfield Armory, and finally sold by the DCM. An included scanned excerpt of the June 2014 “U.S. Martial Arms Collector and Springfield Research Newsletter”, detailing this rifle and its brethren and noting its sale to Frederick A. Olson of Minneapolis, Minnesota. A lovely example of these quite rare International Match rifles, made for the skilled competitors of the U.S. Marine Corps.
