Allen Experimental 22 Semi-Auto Target Pistol Click image to enlarge PreviousNextSimilar Items Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000 Starting: $2,100 Description Description: serial #1, 22 LR, 6 1/2” barrel with a bright excellent bore. This is a fascinating pistol patented by Edward A. Allen of Westfield, MA in May of 1956, patent number US2744448A. The pistol is meant to incorporate a whole host of features conducive to high level target shooting including a revolver type grip, low bore axis, short hammer throw, interchangeable barrels, good symmetry to accommodate either left or right handed shooters and increased reliability in the shape of the magazine and design of the blowback mechanism. The patent indicates the pistol is designed for low to medium power ammunition and the recoil movement of the slide and barrel are cam operated for an oblique blow back action, rather than straight back, producing a reciprocal movement for dependable operation. The magazine is also arched and mounted in such a way to provide consistent operation and reduce the chance of feed problems. The location of the magazine is also rather unique, inserted through a trapdoor between the triggerguard and grip. The pistol is of single action type featuring an interesting button-like trigger with rubber padded face, slide lock and magazine release button forward of triggerguard. There is no extractor, which is not strictly necessary for blow back designs. For a proof of concept prototype the pistol is very professionally made and retains about 90% original blue showing some high edge and operational wear with areas toning to gray under bright light, some of the small parts with a black enamel finish. The pistol is neatly marked with the patent information along the left side, inventor’s name and information on right and serial number along the underside. The checkered walnut grip rates very fine with scattered light dings and a carved foliate motif down the backstrap. There is also a checkered walnut left-side thumb rest mounted to the frame which is removable and the right side of the frame is drilled and tapped for installing a thumb rest on that side instead (extra rest for this side is included). The pistol is sighted with an adjustable square notch rear sight and protected Patridge blade front. The magazine appears to play a role in the trigger reset mechanism as, when it is inserted, the action seems to function well mechanically. With the magazine removed the trigger does not reset properly. The pistol includes a spare 4” barrel assembly with excellent bore and a whole host of other accessories, bits, and bobs including various springs, unfinished magazine blank and wooden components, small parts, pins, and seven different preproduction wooden models demonstrating different iterations of the overall form of the pistol. Considering the completeness of this ensemble, there is little doubt that Peter DeRose acquired this piece from either the family of the inventor or the inventor himself. This pistol is quite an ingenious design but, like many things, was likely deemed too complicated for mass production and marketing. A fine opportunity for the advanced semi-auto pistol collector.
