Best Quality Sidelock Double Ejectorguns Made For Harold Fowlers Click image to enlarge PreviousNextSimilar Items Lot closed - Sold Price (Including Buyer`s Premium):$13,200 Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000 Description Description: Description Update 3/5/24: Section of under-rib is missing between the barrel flats and forend lug of set No. 2 measuring about 3" (beneath the forend). serial #7491 & 7492, 12 ga., 29" barrels both choked .007" and .009" and show bright excellent bores. The guns feature tight English rose and scroll engraving with gold line cocking indicators, automatic safeties, rolled edge triggerguards and the actions are assisted openers. These shotguns began life as straight grip guns and at some point along the way were neatly converted to pistol grips by applying a rounded "Prince of Wales" style knob with expertly altered tangs. The inlets for the straight tangs extend about an inch beyond the rear of the pistolgrip, they are very neatly filled with walnut. The original checkering shows some wear and the applied pistol grips were never checkered. The shotguns show honest use with the barrels of both guns retaining about 65 - 70% evenly thinning original blue blending with a smooth brown patina. The action and locks of gun No. 1 show an even smooth gray patina overall with engraving remaining quite crisp. The triggerguard retains perhaps 30% original blue with balance a smooth gray. The locks of gun No. 2 show about 65% evenly thinning original case color with the balance of the action being more a smooth gray patina. The triggerguard of gun No. 2 is mostly a smooth even gray. All markings remain crisp and the guns are generally free of any pitting. The ejectors of both guns remain robust and function properly, gun No. 2 is ever so slightly out of time but otherwise crisp. The stocks are of nicely figured English walnut and rate very good showing light overall wear and a good deal of original hand rubbed oil finish remaining. Each toeline exhibits a gold oval monogram plate which is engraved "HF". The guns point and handle nicely weighing in at 6 lbs, 14 oz. boasting a 15 1/4" pull over leather covered vented rubber pads. The guns show drops of 1 1/4" and 2 1/4" with the length of pull to the end of the wood being 14 3/16". Both guns are on-face with gun No. 1 showing slight lateral movement, gun No. 2 is tight. The guns come in an original Boss double luggage style case which fits nicely and rates very good plus complete with leather trimmed canvas cover which is stiff and shows its age. Harold Fowler was an Ivy League educated banker, aviator, big game hunter and highly decorated military officer of both World War I and II. Born in Liverpool, England in 1887, his family moved to the United States when he was a schoolboy. He graduated high school and went on to attend Columbia University, graduating in 1908. After working in the New York Stock Exchange, he went on to work as the secretary to the U.S. Ambassador to England. In 1915 he would join the Royal Field Artillery later transferring to the Royal Flying Corps and later qualifying as a pilot in July 1916. His military career would span two world wars and remarkably he would go on to be awarded citations from seven countries including the U.S., Canada, Britain, France, Belgium, Romania and Russia. His accomplishments are too numerous to catalog in this limited space, but they are well documented and an interesting read. One of his more interesting and daring feats was when he flew a his bi-plane through the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in 1918 after the signing of the Armistice. Boss records will indicate that these guns were completed for Fowler in 1928. The guns have remained in the family until now, they are being offered for sale for the first time ever. The guns are circa 1927 and show the proper Dover Street barrel address, the case label is earlier, pre 1908 showing the St. James St. address. These guns are excellent candidates for restoration and will likely provide many more years of service to their new owner. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale (excluding Class III) when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. If an FFL dealer is sending an “agent” to pick up items, that person must be a bona fide, paid employee of the company with a W4 on file. Outside contractors cannot be used as pickup agents. A SIGNED LETTER FROM THE FFL STATING THIS FACT MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF PICK UP. The FFL Dealer will in turn be notified that a transfer was made to you as their agent. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm, on day of sale, provided the proper paperwork is completed and the transfer has been approved either through the N.H. State Police or the FBI NICS System, whichever is appropriate based upon the type of firearm(s) purchased. Non-resident individuals from states without waiting periods may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check. If you reside in a state with a waiting period, your items will need to be shipped to a dealer in your state. No modern handguns will be delivered to non-resident individuals. FIREARM CLASSIFICATION: ANTIQUE - no paperwork required MODERN - Post-1898 firearm which requires an FFL or 4473 with corresponding successful background check in order to be delivered. ABSENTEE/TELEPHONE/ON-LINE BIDDING • As a service to our buyers, Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will accept absentee bids from bidders who cannot attend the sale. Bidders without prior credit approval are required to submit a 20% deposit prior to bids being accepted (credit cards may be used for absentee deposits). Absentee bids will be bid in a competitive manner and an absentee bidder needs only to outbid another buyer i.e. bidding will not be opened at the maximum bid unless that is the next competitive bid. Because we do not open at the absentee bidder's top bid (unless that is the next competitive bid) there is a chance that the absentee bidder's bid may tie with a bidder using a different bidding method (live, Proxibid or telephone bidder). If an absentee bidder wishes to guard against this occurring, they may complete an absentee bid form with a "+" after the bid amount and forward that bid sheet to our office to be entered by Amoskeag. When a "+" is added after the bid amount, the bidder authorizes Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. to make one additional bid in order the break the tie. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges. Properly registered Amoskeag On-line bidders may use this service free of additional charges as an alternative to telephone or absentee bidding, at their election. On-line bidders should be aware that the sale sometimes proceeds at a very rapid pace and should plan their bidding strategies accordingly. • Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be held responsible for errors or omissions of any type that may occur during these services. • All absentee bids must be received by 8:00pm on the day prior to the auction. If you plan to attend the sale but will not be staying until the end and want to leave a bid on an item that will be sold after you leave, we must have those bids in by 8:00am on the morning of the sale. No bids will be accepted after that time. Please do not call the gallery once the auction has started (after 9:00am) as we will not be able to accept bids or make changes to bids. • Amoskeag Auction Company, Inc. will also accept telephone bids on a limited basis. Telephone bidding is reserved for seriously interested bidders. In order to bid by telephone, the bidder must be willing to pay at least the low estimate of the item being bid on. NOTE: Phone bids MUST be arranged by 5:00pm ON THURSDAY prior to the sale. • All absentee/telephone bidder invoices are issued by end of business on the Tuesday following the sale; all invoices are due upon receipt. Invoices are to be paid either by cash or check, or by credit cards listed above.
