This appropriately aged plank measures 46 3/4" long and is 11 1/4" at its widest point. Besides a knot missing near its center, there are three definitive bullet holes likely caused by rifle fire and several smaller impact marks which could possibly have been caused by shrapnel debris of small arms fire. Additional nail holes are also present, some with remnants of antique square head nails still intact. The Rose Farm was acquired by George Rose, a butcher from Germantown, Pennsylvania, from Jacob Benner in 1858. Many of the Rose family along with servants, farm hands, and their family members lived on the estate. The Rose Farm was at the center of some of the fiercest fighting of the war on the second day of the battle. The farm included Stony Hill and Rose Woods along with a twenty-acre field where over 20,000 men engaged in brutal and often hand-to-hand combat. Over six thousand men were killed or wounded there. Ever since it has been known simply as “The Wheatfield”. The thick stone walls of the farmhouse and barn provided shelter to the Confederates of Semmes’ and Kershaw’s Brigades, and the farm buildings were used as a Confederate field hospital. It is estimated that between 500 and 1,000 Confederate soldiers were buried on the property. This plank is said to have been removed from a shed, that that was located near the barn, and was dismantled sometime around 1900. The barn was destroyed by fire in 1910 and never rebuilt. The farm remained in private hands until 1950 when it was acquired by the National Parks Service. A group of family members moved to Marion, NY shortly after the shed was torn down, and brought some of the usable lumber along with them. The lumber remained in storage until 2003, when it was sold by the then current owner and purchased by the consignor. It is believed that this plank was part of the original pieces of the shed that was relocated in the early 1900’s. A unique opportunity to own an interesting relic with possible ties to the most pivotal battle in American History.
